Australian PM invites ASEAN leaders to special summit in Canberra

BANGKOK, 9 September 2016 (NNT) – Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has invited South-East Asian leaders to a special summit in Canberra in bid to deepen regional strategic relations in 2018.

The Australian premier made the invitation following the second ASEAN-Australia dialogue, which gave Australia a direct audience with the 10 ASEAN member nations at the National Conference Center in Vientiane, Laos, on September 7, 2016.

The summit will cover regional issues such as terrorist threats and future trade between Australia and ASEAN. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha proposed a strategic partnership between ASEAN and Australia to deal with new type of terrorist threats.

The Thai leader considered Australia a good model for progress in innovation in economic and social aspects as well as other dimensions.

Thailand and ASEAN can learn from Australia’s experiences and expand cooperation in technology and innovation with Australia, he said.

The Australian Premier...... Which one?  There are 6 Premiers in Australia.  Calling the Prime Minister a Premier is like calling Prayuth a Colonel.

Strange that Prayut would cite Australia a good model for (among other things) other dimensions, given that he, the junta, and their cronies have already taken Thailand into another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas; you've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.

Absolutely correct. But remember in Thailand the unelected  is variously called the Prime Minister and Premier, there does not seem to be a distinction here.

This totally depends on the audience the words are directed to.  In many parts of the world the PM is often referred to as the Premier.  In this case the word "Premier" was preceded by the word "Australian" so it was completely within accepted conventions.

This is not till 2018 , so both Prayut and Prime Minister Mal Turnbull will be out by then , Mal may struggle to make it to 2017, has only 1 seat majority and  Prayut,  a lot relies on how much guts the people have..................................................:coffee1:

Like all politicians Mal will simply u-turn and lie to suit the flavor of the month, week, day or hour.

It's a required skill for the job.

True. That Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull all came to power via a coup in their respective parties and were not elected to the position of Prime Minister is of course different. They went to the electorate later after first taking the top job and then none polled an absolute majority.

Oh, for God's sake. Does it really matter?

True, but the Australian public do not elect the prime minister the party in power chooses. It is true that the so called coups in Australia may have ultimately produced an unforseen result.
