rooster59
Government begins paying 400-baht monthly subsidy to low-income earners’ infants BANGKOK:-- The government yesterday began paying 400 baht cash subsidy to 56,400 infants of low-income earners under its plan to improve the quality of life of poor families. According to Mr Manat Jaemweha, director-general of the Comptroller General’s Department, the first round of payment to infants whose mothers have earlier registered for the state welfare assistance for newly-born babies amounted to 22.6 million baht. He said the cash subsidies were paid into the bank accounts of the mothers in three state banks, Krungthai, Government Savings Bank and Thai Military Bank. He said the money was paid via the national e-payment service. shirtless
400 baht a month are you sure you can afford to be so generous. This proves how out of touch the government is to infant related costs.

But, and that is the problem, not enough tax comes in. And they are not out of touch, there simply is not enough money to pay more.

jcsmith
This is a step in the right direction, and as such hard to complain. It's better than nothing. However, if a different administration had put it into power we'd be hearing grumbles about populist policies.

Artisi
See all the whinging experts are on the case already, sure it's only Bht 400 but 400 more than previous governments have paid who's members were too occupied with lining their own pockets at the expense of the poor of Thailand --how much was wasted on the rice pledging scheme and other like project which could have been put to good use supporting the poor. But this is Thailand and the poor don't figure in the minds of the politicians scheming and manipulating to ensure their own pockets are always full. Recover the wasted and stolen money from the criminal politicians and other government officials and this Bht 400 could easily become 800 or more. There's a good chance there's more taxes being paid in Thailand while canada is a much larger country to maintain. The difference is that for public projects, canadian politicians and contractors only skim 5-10% max while in Thailand it's usualy over 50%. Just give back 20% of the skimming taken on road resurfacing for these mothers and im certain the amount could be above 1k baht
Krataiboy
Do really poor people even HAVE bank accounts to pay money into?
seajae
unless more thais pay tax instead of using a cash economy any govt payments to anyone will be low. Somehow I doubt you will find any of the thais currently not paying taxes on their earnings willing to start doing so, so that poor kids can get more money put towards them. Unfortunately when you have a low taxing country you also have low benefit payments if any at all, at least the govt is starting to recognize some people need help. Lets hope any no hoper parents dont decide this is for their benefit only and spend it on themselves instead of the kids but then this happens in the western countries as well so I guess it will happen here as well. greenchair
Chatter amongst thai teenage girls will be something like this. Noi : I'm going to get pregnant. Som : oh, don't do that , how can you take care of it. Lek: no, you will have no money. Noi: never mind, I can get 400 baht a month and give the baby to my grandparents. I'll be rich. And my grandparents will have something to do. Lek and som: what a great plan, let's all get pregnant together. 400 baht a month for doing nothing. Yahoo.
