Analysts: Thai export growth will remain negative this year

  

BANGKOK, 14 September 2016 (NNT) - Financial analysts have predicted that this year’s Thai economic growth will reach 3% and warned that exports will likely remain in the negative territory for four consecutive years. 

Executive of Kasikornbank Korbsit Silapachai said the Thai economy in the third quarter could grow by 3% with investment by the government and tourism growth as supporting factors. However, the export sector tended to continue to drop due to a decrease in imports of Thailand’s trade partners. 

The Monetary Policy Committee would likely maintain the policy interest rate at 1.5% until next year, Mr. Korbsit added. 

Meanwhile, Director of the Thailand Development Research Institute Kirita Phaophichit said Thailand’s 2016 GDP could grow by 3% mainly due to external factors especially a benchmark rate increase by the Fed and the U.S. presidential election in November. 

The director also predicted that the Thai export sector would grow by -2% due to an economic slowdown in Thailand’s trade partners and better competitiveness of the country's competitors.

Correct. Also the high baht means exports are dearer and less attractive to overseas buyers while imported products are cheaper and more attractive to consumers than Thai produced products.

But who cares about the economic well being of the country so long as the fat cats are protected and can maintain the value of their riches with the high Thai baht.

The economic problems are still not our fault. It's other countries' fault for their "better competitiveness."
