That's a pretty comprehensive list. Except you neglected to mention the whole arena of censorship of news media and ordinary citizens, arrests for speech opposing the official line and/or the recent Constitution referendum, police bringing criminal defamation actions against those who criticize their performance, arrests for public protests and political speech, bans on political gatherings, etc etc etc.

Everything you wrote comes under "martial law" which can be used to cover your entire list.

Technically, I don't think Thailand is under an official state of "martial law" at present.

But in reality, of course, that's pretty much what it is in a variety of ways, except perhaps for the absence of night-time curfews.

Somehow I don't see the conversation going like...The U.S.A., Great Britain, Germany,  France and Thailand.

Yeah, those countries are in far better shape.  Indeed...

"While there is no current consensus on an exact definition of the term, in modern usage, "First World country" generally implies a relatively wealthy, stable and functional non-theocratic democracy with a reasonably well educated population, or just any developed country."

Yup, that's Thailand!!

In a wide-ranging speech to commemorate his cabinet’s two years in power, Prayuth said Thailand has a stronger economy, more social equality, improved safety and general welfare. So good are the indicators, he said, his regime’s achievements could steer the nation toward First World status after his tenure ends.

Well, not only is none of what he just claimed true, he didn't even bother to mention his oppression-paved "roadmap to democracy"

Where is my bucket... :bah:

It certainly isn't going to happen while he stays in power.

Maybe he confused first with third? You know there are so many fingers in one hand (5), it's easy to get confused. :)

I am now starting to feel sorry for the poor man. Heaven knows what an embarrassment he must be to his rich and famous friends.

Totally cringeworthy.

Now there's an interesting point, what's the chance his elite friends and backers will ever decide he's a liability ?

They can't real him in because he has become far to powerful.  He has Article 44 which allows him to do anything to anyone who goes against him and that includes the legal execution.  They created a monster who is growing  more unstable everyday.

Throughout history counter-coups have often come from within the military including the military that staged the original !

Just a thought and not necessarily a nice one.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Prayuth Zone.

I believe that martial law is still in effect in the Southern Muslim provinces.

Hard to understand as Prayut denies that there is any insurgency.

That's it; he's lost the plot.

What they didn't say is they have found a cure for old age and thus the dear great leader will become 300 years old before he retires and achieve his goal of first world status.

So his tenure ruling is indefinite then?

The baht is high and over inflated, exports are down, more thai households are in debt and unemployment is on the rise along with many other things.  Numnuts prayuth smiles and waves at his Subjects and says how magnificent he is.

You forgot he said they must eat cake.

What has his regime really achieved? Not much. The south is still very rebellious, slavery still exists, martial law is still in place, the police carry on as usual, corruption is still rampant, the justice system is a mess, education is a farce, the economy is "troubled", exports are declining, ordinary people are in serious debt,  etc.

But I noticed that soldiers have become very arrogant lately, they now realize that they have more power than even the cops, and they don't care about hassling foreigners either.

Yeah, but...that is only the reality!

Silly you!

in most first world countries (probably all) the army is controlled by the government. if he wants the minority to control the masses he is going to have to become a lot more violent. it is possible and there have been many cases of minorities controlling the masses but it can not be done in a peaceful way.

Hey, could have been worse. He could have sung "My Way"

The country may be on the cusp of something but I wouldn't say greatness.

Yes and other than an event that we can't talk about that ' something ' could be terrible for the country.
