webfact
Like taking candy from a baby - Thai women want a western husband so badly they are easily parted from their money Image: Daily News BANGKOK: -- Two romance scammers have been arrested in Bangkok after stealing an estimated 20 million baht in just one year from Thai women who wanted love and marriage to a western man. The husband and wife team found it easy to get victims on chat websites and the tricks to get them to part with money were tried and tested, reported Daily News. The woman is Thai herself while the husband is Nigerian. He pretended he was white and rich to get the trust of victims. They have connections abroad. Uraporn Kesawattana, 34, was arrested on a Minburi court warrant and her partner Chinaka Chinedu, 23 was also nabbed. The husband and wife pair were apprehended at a car air-con repair shop in Thonburi by Crime Suppression Division police yesterday. Uraporn said that it was easy to get the victims to part with their money, so desperate were they for a foreign husband. Chinaka got the victims and befriended them saying he was white and rich. Then came the sting. He would tell the victims he had sent them an expensive set of gifts. Uraporn then contacted the victims pretending she was from the police or customs and that several million baht had been found in the gift packages. In order to secure their release up to a million baht needed to be paid in bribes. When the victims believed this she used the Line application under the came "Cargo 12" to send bank account details for victims to transfer money. Then they disappeared from the scene and moved on to the next victim. She said that she sent the money gained on to others in Malaysia getting 5-10% commission each time. She said that 100 victims had fallen prey to them in a year. She was charged with fraud and detained. The Nigerian originally came to Thailand to try out as a footballer at one of the country's top teams. But when he was not chosen he turned to the scam. Police are still gathering evidence in his case but detained him on a charge that he has overstayed his visa. rkidlad
I've heard about this scam before. The reason why the women in this story got stung is because they're greedy, stupid and arrogant. Some foreigner wants to give you gold and iPhones, etc? Why? Do you really think you're so special that some stranger can't wait to just give you expensive items? Then some immigration official says they have him but can't release him until a fee is paid. So because you're so desperate for the free loot, you're willing to break the law and bribe a government officer? Sorry, I have no sympathy at all. These fraudsters are bad and will get their punishment. The women who were duped under the guise of 'love'. No! You were greedy and were taught a lesson in life. Ain't nothing in life for free. JAG
A friend of my wife is heading (I reckon) for such a sting. She has "met" a man on Facebook. He claims that he is a manager in the petroleum business in London and has lots of money. He is going to come to Thailand, and buy her a house, car and farm. At the moment he is having a problem with getting a visa (?). I was shown his Facebook photo - late 30s, well groomed, South Asian or Middle Eastern at a guess. My wife's friend is in her early 40s, quite attractive but not a stunner. I tried to explain my doubts but "you don't understand, he loves her. .." Unfortunately many only believe what they want to believe because it suits their ideas, wants and needs and don't want to be told otherwise. If it's too good to be true etc doesn't come into it. Bluespunk
Love, it would seem, is often like the stock market. You have to speculate to accumulate. Not all stocks however will yield dividends and some may not be the bargain they appear to be in the sales brochure.

I advised my wife's sister that the visa required for her to get a nanny job in UK should not require her to pay for it (or part of it) herself. Yes - but the point is she has never physically met this fellow. So he has whatever passport he tells her he has, and that is the case for all the other claims. And promises too. jaltsc
"Uraporn said that it was easy to get the victime to part with their money, so desperate were they for a foreign husband." No empathy or sympathy here. They weren't so desperate for a foreign husband. They were desperate for "Easy Money". It was their greed that did them in. In the end, they did make easy money....For the scammers.

hdkane
A long time ago, I had a Thai gf who fell for this scam. Her family did not like me because I did not support them. So they encouraged her to find a new bf on a dating website. I found out she was cheating (at least on the internet) when she borrowed the life savings of her family to send to her "new bf" who needed the money to clear customs and deliver her millions of baht in gold. The best part was that the family (who knew she was ditching me for the new bf) wanted me to reimburse everyone who gave my gf money. After my stunned reaction, all I could do was scratch my head and smile. As further evidence of Thai character, her family ostracized her when I wouldn't pay.
