Tot Adsl Security Issue

I'm wondering, when I got ADSL installed where I live (By TOT), the username and password

is the same as my telephone number, followed by a "@goldcyber".

Now, all my internet cruising neighbours also has the same default setup with their

phone numbers.

So, what would stop somebody (anyone who knows my phone number) from simply acquiring/figure out my login details and surf away without paying a dime ?

I already tried to login with my neighbours login, no problems there.

It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out somebodys phone number, and if they got a

gold package, now does it ?

Is it the same for you people out there with TOT adsl, I mean do you also have your phone number as password ?

They can't because you have to log in on the line with the same number. So yes, anyone can call at your house and connect up to 'your' ADSL, but they can't use your password and username on their line.

That is strange, sounds like poor cross checks at TOT. Do you have the option to change the password after your initial setup is complete? Also, even if you can use your neighbors password you will probably be still be billed the charges due to it being locked to the phone line (IMHO).

Friend2, your're completly right. Some time ago I borrowed the modem/router of my computer shop. It connected immediately.I saw I was using his login and password but I didn't pay any attention to it.

To re-investigate your question, I just ago re-configured my modem using another friends' login and password (number@xxxxxxxcyber and number) and IT WORKS! Even using bittorrent I get values of 95K, same as with my own number. It means that the connections isn't even split. He even lives in another district (but same province).

But then again. Does this really matter? I don't think that you can get an ADSL connection on a standard telephone line using your friends' login and password but it's worth to try.

Forgot to write. There's no possibility to change this setting. It is related to the PPPOE of TOT.

I don't think it really matters, is the answer.

The modem will only connect if someone at TOT has enabled the DSL signal on your line, and that only happens if you pay.

It is flat monthly charge, unrelated to how much you use the line

and the speed/package is set by the TOT side as well.

The speed package depends on what login you're using.

If I let's say, subscribe to the cheapest (500 Baht a month) package,

but are using my gold subscriber neighbours login.

I can save 500 baht a month...

1 neighbour pays for gold, the rest of us takes the "bronze" package.

We then split the additional cost for neigbour 1 and can all surf as gold members...

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they never find out (or care) at TOT.

There are 2 speed parameters.

1. DSL line speed, set by the DSLAM at the exchange (browsing the modem page will tell you this.)

See the Downstream/Upstream figure below.

2. The max speed permitted by the logon, at the PPOE level.

If you pay for the Bronze then your line (1) will/should be limited to a max of 512kb/s by the DSLAM

and you will never achive a higher speed(2).

It all depends on the settings at the exchange. You might be lucky.

Not that I condone any such actions and further discussion here will result in a warning penalty.
