BANGKOK, 22 September 2016 (NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister for security affairs said the government would launch a new policy aimed at encouraging people in Bangkok to rely on public transportation, in an effort to solve daily traffic congestion.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan revealed that a three-stage approach has been developed to relieve Bangkok traffic. In the short term, traffic regulations will be enforced rigorously and indiscriminately over a period of one month.

Regarding the previously publicized seven-day relief measure, Gen Prawit claimed it was not his intention to put pressure on those responsible for traffic management, adding that they have been performing their duties every day.

He also said there was no need to resort to Section 44 of the 2014 Interim Constitution to deal with traffic problems. To solve the traffic crisis in the medium term, the government will promote the use of public transportation. In the long term, sky train and bus services will be improved to attract more Bangkok commuters.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Migitation launched a road safety campaigned for primary school students at the Demonstration School of Suan Sunundha Rajabhat University to instill a sense of road courtesy and discipline in young children.

Department Director-General Kobchai Boon-orana said children had the opportunity to learn about traffic regulations, traffic signs and the importance of wearing helmets.

Put a push on to move commuters to bts, great. But have they thought of adding more trains to the bts before the push? My guess is not as they forgot to add more trains after extending the line. So like before when they made a big deal to give tax advantages to put more cars on the road but not improving the roads or traffic first they are doing the same thing. Improve the bts crowds first then add to them. And please please reorganize the bts stations, more escalators, open the elevators and most needed, move the cash booths and ticket machines away from the gates. The congestion at the gates is almost impossible to maneuver with lines for change merging with lines for tickets blocking everyone trying to get through the gates, turnstiles. Make rabbit cards free to entice new riders and reduce the lines. Oh wait, never mind all those make sense.

IMHO Kids starting to learn about traffic regulations / laws is the best point in this announcement.

Yes there needs to be better coordination between different service, but many folks just can't afford the BTS.

IMHO in Thailand's state of development 'the user pays' is not logical or practical. Fares should be well subsidized. Its' been said many times that BTS is well under it's full operational capacity. Should be subsidized on the Bkk underground and all the new lines under construction.  Car parks at stations would also help as long as there is proper security,  and very good lighting and numerous easy to find 'help buttons'.

I think they may have to expand a bit on this effort with regards to road safety for all..........................

It will likely be to the advantage to the primary students as they drive to school in the mornings.

Well, next month is October so many kids will be on holiday and not going to school. So the traffic will actually be better next month no thanks to anyone.

Nice new electric buses that are affordable and driven safely would be nice. They have priority in the left lane. Only problem is police doing their job.

For the DPM to encourage more use of public transport then he has the job in front of him if he wants more people to ride Bangkok's public buses.

With the exception of the a/c buses which are of a reasonably high standard the rest are a disgrace. Rattling old claptraps held together with splonk. The synchromesh has long been ground up so with the gear crunching noises added to the rattles and shakes and metal to metal squealing brakes it makes for a sound experience like no other. The drivers all look they just got out of bed with a bad hangover and drive like they competing in some suburban grand prix resulting in standing passengers being thrown around the buses like rag dolls. Riding on these buses is a heart stopping experience.

And that's only when you are on board, try getting on and off. It is a death defying act when they stop out in the middle of the street/road and you have to navigate your way through speeding cars, trucks and motorbikes to get to and from the footpath. Still you get what you pay for and 8 baht or whatever is not expensive.

It is an experience beyond belief and should be on every expats bucket list. Nearly as good a parachuting I expect.

Can start by eliminating 50% of the taxi's in Bkk. Most of those dicks won't pick you up anyway or they are cluttering up the side streets by parking there waiting to rip off unsuspecting tourists.

Try making some roads that go through as well.

The city planners (if there ever were any here) should be locked up for the mess they have created of the streets of Bkk

Late addition:  "
