I'm going to Myanmar next month for 14 days.

I'm looking for suggestions of interesting places to photograph and personal recommendations of non government accommodation.

I'm starting in Mandalay and finishing in Yangoon.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Call me weird but I thought photography was illegal in Myanmar? Sure its ok in very toursited areas, and ok at the Mai Sai border as long as you don't bring too much attention to yourself, but depending where you go, it a country under military dictatorship that is paranoid enough to move its capitol overnight in secret.

I'm sure you can take pix in those places you mentioned, but I'm just pointing out that I doubt there will be recommendations for many other interesting places off the normal beaten tracks. If you do find yourself in other locations, I would be careful and somewhat discreet, or at least aware of whos around when you pull out the camera. Good luck getting some great shots though, I hear Yangoon is quiet, peaceful and beautiful.

I took hundreds of photos all over the place. The only military men I saw were at Song Kran, they filled my water squirter for me. From Mandalay take a boat up to Mingun. Also try and get over to Lake Inlay (Inle) for a scenic and relaxing time. In Mandalay go up the hill and around the fort. Bagan (Pagan) has hundreds of temples. The people are wonderful. Have a great time.

I havent travelled through Myanmar so I'm not commenting on specifics I don't know, I'm just saying that in countries where there is political turbulence or sensitive world topics occuring, do not be surprised if you are approached at some point and asked to see what pics you have just taken. This has happened to me a LOT in several countries, from Iraq to Indonesia. Myanmar is not a free country and has suffered under a paranoid military control and civil war for a long time, so I'm only saying its good to be aware of where you are pulling out your camera.

As far as having travelled all over Myanmar shooting images, there are vast areas of Myanmar that are under restrictred travel, which is the main reason I posted this. But yes I know you can take pictures in Myanmar, just cant get to a lot of places rarely seen with that camera. Good luck and be careful with your photography there.
