PHUKET:-- Mongkunkit Phongnarisorn sat in a window seat aboard the Thai Airways flight that ran off the Phuket Airport runway last night.

The Phuket-based businessman was returning from Bangkok aboard flight TG221.

“Everything seemed to be going perfectly normally,” Mr Mongkunkit told the Phuket Gazette today, adding that he travels regularly for work.

Don't fly to Phuket in September, weather could be bad

Just 9 years after the terrible One-Two-GO crash this could have become another Phuket disaster.

Weather is bad the world over and at many airports but planes like this don't just go waltzing off the runway. The Department of Civil Aviation might be able to flush out the real reason why the plane took a detour. Black Boxes on Thai aircraft have no secrets or do they?

I agree. First sentence was meant ironically.

IFR commercial pilot here.

It's most likely pilot error and in bad weather and strong crosswinds he most likely hand flew the approach.

with a strong cross-wind, you can basically fly an airplane perpendicular to the runway (crabbing) and at the moment of the first rear wheel hitting the runway you slam the rudder to point the nose of the aircraft on the centerline of the runway while turning the ailerons into the crosswind.

It sounds very complicated but its not, its a basic skill required to get even a private pilots license.

As far as the hard landing, most likely stalled just before landing, or came in to fast/slow etc.

If it was windy the piliot should have rolled all the Windows down on the airplane before approach. That way the wind would have just blown through the airplane not blowing the plane around as much as if you leave the Windows up.

Mr Mongkunkit said no announcement was made to the passengers by either the pilots or the flight attendants, even after the masks dropped into view.

Well, that would have been admitting somethnig was wrong, but as it was a Thai flight that would be impossible.

My son is a pilot and is based at Phuket this week. He said the weather has been bad for 2-3 days but nothing that is troubling

The ILS system in Phuket is a little finicky and if it isn't deactivated at the appropriate time before landing leads you off the side of the runway. That’s why Emirates and Qatar, who are unfamiliar with the airport, always ask for a GPS approach.
