Motorbike Tax & Insurance Service CM

Recommended Posts

Good evening Chiang Mai,

I used to go to the government office to get the bike tested, and renew the tax and insurance. The last time I did that I got stuck in an outdoor queue for almost four hours under a scorching sun. I can remember complaining about it at the time and someone suggested I pay a small fee for a garage to do it for me. This place was on Nimmanhaemin Rd, Soi 15-I think. Well, I went there today and the garage has since been knocked down and some other unknown construction put up in it's place.

My question is this: is this a service we can find in other locations, and if so, I'd love it if someone could point me in the right direction. I did hear that the Honda shop on Huai Kaew Rd might do it, but when I headed over there this afternoon, all the shutters were down. Maybe they've moved on too (the changing face of Chiang Mai).

Anyway, if I can avoid the dreaded government office trip I will, so any suggestions much appreciated.

Canal road, about 1km south of Suthep Road on the west side. New facility, set back from the road a bit...

(PS: These are like satellite offices and charge a small fee to do your tax renewal. Usually takes 48 hours to get your green book back with new sticker)

Thanks guys, those are useful tips. I'll check them out later today if I get time. I'm on the doorstep or canal road so I'll go there first. Dante99, does Pro Auto have their name above the door? Someone once told me to look for any garage with a little cog sign on the outside, but I couldn't find any of those yesterday.

I will update this thread once I've got a result ;)

The outside queue is for insurance. Get your insurance (por to bor) from any bank then go to the government office in Nong Hoi, a few minutes that way.

Thanks Naboo, but I think I need my bike inspection before the bank will issue insurance. And if I can, I prefer the one-stop-shop approach as that's what I'm familiar with. You just drop off the papers, take a receipt and pick the new tax and insurance up a few days later. It's as quick as a trip to 7-eleven.

THE SATURDAY UPDATE

Kilt, I went up and down Canal Rd four times and couldn't see anything. I eventually stopped at a battery shop called 3K. The guy in there told me to go to the next U-turn, head back his way, and I'll see the shop I want on the return. I couldn't. Each time I stopped to ask someone they pointed in a different direction. There was a lot of friendly pointing today, but not so much on specifics. I gave up after a couple of hours of curb-crawling (for want of a better expression), staring at every roadside business. I eventually headed back over to the big Honda shop to try my luck. It was still boarded up!

Phew! I thought it would be easier than this LOL :)

I guess I will venture out again on Monday. If anyone has any actual shop/garage names, locations, landmarks, etc., please let me know so that I can find one of these places.

Thanks in advance,

Yes Pro Auto has a name on the building, a big sign, they are sponsors of this forum so you should find their contact info and map easily, google will probably give it to you too.

The place on Canal road has one of the "cog" signs outside. It's on the WEST side of canal.

It does not look like a garage... more like a new designer coffee shop.

As I said, it is not right on the road. It's set back a bit with a a crescent driveway (in one side, out the other).

All they do is tax and registration renewals. Couldn't be easier. I'm not in CM right now or I'd take you there, or take a pic for you...

Oh well....

Thanks anyway Kilt, I appreciate you taking the time to explain. I'm still curious--curious as to how you found it if it's so concealed. Maybe you can point it out next time you're here ;)

Just a quick update folks.

I found Pro Auto nice and easy this afternoon. They do the motorcycle stuff behind the main shop front. It's a one-stop-shop for the test, tax and insurance. They'll even service your bike and change the breaks and tires if you need them to. Khun Ton is very helpful and easy to talk with, which is an added bonus.
