One has to be a very, very, very stupid person to play the Thai lottery. One has a better chance of winning at the casino playing the slots, that's how poor the pay out ratio is.

The Government Lottery Office ACT B.E.2517

Chapter 3; Finance, accounting and auditing

SECTION 22. The proceeds received by the Government Lottery Office from the sale of government lottery tickets shall be allocated as follows:

(1) sixty percent as prizes;

(2) not less than twenty-eight percent as State revenue;
(3) not exceeding twelve percent as expenditure on administration inclusive of the expense in respect of the sale of government lottery tickets.

As I anticipate that someone will say, wow, 60% of participants win something. Nope. Not at all. It means that only a very, very small number of players will actually win a part of a  relatively small pot of money. I'll make it even simpler to comprehend. Of the estimated 20 million  Thai   nationals who play in any given year, only a  few hundred participants win an amount that is somewhat large.  Exceptionally poor odds, and exceptionally poor moral ethics to run a lottery  in this manner.

Have you seen the Government Lottery Office? Its like an expensive mausoleum.

Play for fun. GF llike to play. Don't expect to win, but hope to. We have hit 2 numbers 5 times. Few months ago we came close to B400k. Winning number was 669966. We had 669969. The first 5 numbers matched and GF almost had a coronary as she was watching the draw Live, but 5 of 6 pays same as 0 of 6...NOTHING:post-4641-1156693976:  555

Lotteries in every country are just another tax on the poor. When a lottery in the states eclipses 300-400 million I would buy one ticket! As they say you never know.

Tax on the poor??? So you wait for it to be x amount then buy a ticket. So you leach of the poor then

Beg to differ. Lotteries play on people's greed

Not totally sure but I'd guess Bezos Branson and Gates don't play lotteries. $1 to win 400mil after the taxes I'd be helping a lot of people.2 Flames doused with a comment, bring it on boys

Not only are major prizes pathetic compared to other Countries, should you win one you are taxed on top of that. Complete waste of time and money, much more chance of winning the (illegal) local lottery. Every village has one.

Illegal?? Nobody should ever do anything illegal, laws are made for a reason.:shock1:

They do not claim tax for prizes under 100000 baht .

I play in the lottery every month , only buy a couple of tickets .

I won 4000 baht once , paid out by the vendor , no questions asked, I gave him a 50 baht tip.

I too usually play - albeit with less.... enthusiasm... as my Thai colleagues.. I play largely so that we can all participate in draw day.

Have I won? Small stuff- yes.. And all was paid without issue or any kind of off-book payment/process required.

I do agree that the Acts stated 60% prize pool is, IMHO, low, therefore for me makes playing with anything more than doing so purely for short-term recreational intent, a bad odds matter

How very condescending of you.

I would agree with the rest of your post so why start it in such a way very very very condescending.

Now to answer the op in a less condescending way. Yes I play the lottery both times. I buy 3 tickets each time so 480bht a month. Roughly £10 a month. Have I won yes on several occasions I have been lucky nothing massive but a win is a win when I was back in birth country I played twice a week normal lottery £4 in total and euro millions on a Friday £2  so  £6 A WEEK £24 a month won a lot less than I have here in Thailand.

How much have you won in the Thailand lottery? . If you have not won much then you are probably getting 2 or 3 digit wins;  last 3 digits payout is 2,000 baht, last 2 digits payout is 1,000 baht.

Several occasions is what? 2? 3? 4? wins?

You say you spend  480 baht a month. That's 5760 baht per annum.

Let's say you won 3 X over 5 years. That's anywhere from 3000 to  6000 baht.

How long have you been playing?  5 years? 10 years?  Let's say  5 years and you have paid 28800.

What exactly did you gain? You would have lost  anywhere from 25500 to 22,800 with your cunning plan.

Do you realize that you could have taken that money and put it in a boring bank and would have had at least 30,000 baht before tax after 5 years. instead you have  between  3,000 and 6,000 baht.

This does not strike me as a good way to  increase one's wealth.

So nice if you can dream up the facts yourself to push your opinion down someone throat.

Then you don't get the point. You play to win the big prizes. you know the chances are less than 1% ,  but someone will end up like winners , you don't do this every month to invest money .

Anyway maybe better to play in the lottery than pay your girlfriend a salary every month.

Calm down its my money I spend not yours. I said your post was very condescending and this last post only goes to prove this.

How much have I won or how many times is nothing whatsoever to do with you. Where did I say I had a plan it's a bloody lottery I play I don't play it to increase wealth I play it because I WANT to. Now go and get yourself a brandy and stop trying to tell me what I can and can't do.

I play occasionally. Won a 3 number prize once and a couple of 2 number prizes. Most of my Thai friends play on the hopes of winning a 2 number prize, not the "big" prize. If they win something larger, great, but they aren't hanging on the hopes of suddenly becoming filthy rich like so many people in the West do. Buy a new motorcycle and my friends think I should buy tickets that match the license (I'm sure everyone has heard all the "lucky number" stories that go around). They don't seem to realize that those "lucky numbers" rarely ever win any more than any other number, but they are mostly playing for fun anyways.

When I cleaned out dear old dad's house a few years back he had large paper grocery bags (remember those ?) full of old lottery tickets he'd been buying since the 70s. Almost 6 full bags ! Would have been more but he had a lottery subscription on the 6/49 so he could play his favourite numbers every draw and not have to buy new tickets each time. Nearly 40 years of trying and the biggest prize he ever won was low 4 figures (a couple thousand dollars).

One survey done in Canada some years back asked about people's retirement plans. Nearly 60% of the respondents noted that they planned on funding a large portion of their retirement with lottery winnings ! They weren't even trying to save anything, or invest it, because they just figured that sooner or later they'd win millions and that would be enough !! Just plain nuts ! Your odds of winning one of those big lotteries is about 1/3 of your chance of being struck by lightning ! In other words, you are more likely to be struck by lightning three times than winning the lottery once.

But if you can afford it and aren't hung up on trying to win "the big one" then why not ? If I do win one day, great. If not, som nom na.

And like the joke goes:

Worshipper: "Please lord, let me win the lottery. I've been faithful and praying for many years. Please let me win just this one time !"

Lord: "Try to meet me halfway and at least buy a damn ticket !"

I buy tickets, purely because if good fortune is trying to find me, I have to open a door. Never too much, and I win the 2 or 3 digit prize now and then, but nothing substantial (yet). I find it amusing how some folks can persuade themselves that next week's results have manifested themselves on the bark of a tree!
