BANGKOK, 24 September 2016 (NNT) – The Defense Technology Institute gave the military drone prototypes to be used in the violence-torn region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, on behalf of the Defense Technology Institute, handed out unmanned aerial vehicles to the Thai army, the Royal Thai Police, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and the Department of Corrections.

These prototypes will assist officials in security-related operations.

They can stay 500 feet in the air for as long as 40 minutes and can be controlled from 2 kilometers away. With their ability to send live thermal images to the monitor, these aerial vehicles are expected to save lives of security officials in southernmost provinces.

The cost of building this type of drone is only 500,000 baht.

Thanks for the tip. I had a look, cheapest start at $8, but even the most expensive at $9999 +$425 delivery don't come anywhere near the specs of the items being discussed.

BTW Kickback was offered, a $13 voucher.

Insurgencies typically go tit-for-tat in warfare. Thai Army use of drones might be respo

The Defense Technlogy Institute didn't say the cost to purchase the drone was Bt500,000. So it might be  that the DTI  built the drones from scratch at a cost of 500,000 baht each, at a cost much less than 500,000 baht, actually purchased the drones for the government with an alleged cost of 500,000 baht each.

Regardless of how the 500,000 baht is interpreted, DTI as a public organization giving the government a military/police related instrument should be viewed as a potential conflict of interest and violation of procurement regulations even when received free.

Doh! Just what do you think a Defence Technology Institute is for except to supply the military and police with advanced technology equipment?

Have a link (aside from this article) for DTI that explains its mission as you claim to be manufacture and supply of military and police equipment for field use? Otherwise, your Doh is just a guess to trivalize a comment.

Good link.

Aside from the clue is " DTI also producing the DTI-2 for use with Chinese-made SR4." So not only does DTI design (including adaptation of foreign technology) but also produces military weapon systems for the RTM.

But one of my threads concerned its cited cost  for drones at 500,000Bt each being given to the RTM free of charge. Many of the posts to this article criticize its purchase at 500,000Bt each. But concerns still apply as to why DTI needed to develop technology at an exorbiant cost that's already available more cheaply in the public market.

I find that DTI is labeled a public organization - aka autonomous public organizations.1 They are created by parliament such as the  National Science and Technology Development Agency and operate under supervision of the Thai government. DTI is not a private company. The RTM is Chairman of DTI's Board of Directors. DTI's activities are funded by the government/military.2  On the other hand according to your link, DTI retains copyright for its designs should the RTM produce its products as if DTI were a private company.
