I have an Australian passport with only 7 months left which I have been using for my Thai visas and a brand new blank Canadian passport. I want to change to the Canadian passport on a visa run from Chiang Mai.

 

I plan to fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and then Bangkok to Vientiane and obtain a Laos visa on arrival at the airport on entry. So I want to get stamped out in my Australian passport and then stamped in to Laos at the international airport in Vientiane in my blank Canadian passport. Is this possible?

I have two previous consecutive Tourist visas from the Thai consulate in Vientiane. Since I am using a new passport will this visa count as my first or my third?

Can't help with the changing of Passports but your SETV in a new one will count as your first, they count the number of stamps in each Passport not how many you may  have had in total from that Embassy on different Passports

Yes, it is possible. I have done it coming back into Thailand before (land crossing at Nong Khai), so there's no reason why not. Laos immigration will probably want to see your Aussie passport though.

I have two passports also the same as the OP and there is absolutely no reason why Laos immigration should ask to see the Australian passport. In fact many websites that offer advice to dual citizenship travellers recommend that you don't flash two passports around in front of immigration officials or airline staff. 

 

instead if possible the OP should have the old Canadian passport(presumably full) at hand to show Laos immigration  why there was a need for a new passport

You can do it since you are traveling by air.

The embassy will only look at your empty passport and issue your visa. They will not check any records to see if you have gotten one before.

Laos immigration wouldn't let me in before they saw my exit stamp from Thailand. This was on a land crossing though and I have never been asked at an airport. But, I still think it's good to be prepared.

it's a whole different issue when you cross the land border as you did and of course they are going to be looking for an exit stamp from Thailand.

But when the OP flies into Laos it is highly unlikely Laos immigration are going to be interested in where his travel originated. For all they know he started his journey in Canada and simply transited in Bangkok airport so that's why I said there is no need to show them or volunteer any information about his Australian passport.

The only thing that might draw attention is the fact that it will be a brand-new and empty Canadian passport and that's why I suggested if possible he should be able to produce his old Canadian passport to show why his new passport has not been used.
