OP, this has nothing to do with the Thais.  It's more about your GF and her dysfunctional family.  All the Thais that I know love their families and show it, probably more than westerners do.

You are trying to say Thais show more  affection then in the west NO WAY Thais not give a shit it is all about money here .

I have seen it time after time how Thais never ever show affection to there family members.

It is not a thai thing affection Thais wake that is it that is how they show it a wake .

I live with a Thai family and have been here many years. My family is very close and caring, would do anything for each other, but they do not show much physical affection. Some towards the kids. And I rarely see anyone in the countryside here who does show physical affection in public... maybe old traditional style, not sure. But, I have no doubt as to their caring for each other. This is evidenced every time someone is ill or in need and everyone will drop anything to come and assist.

My family in the West never did either though.

I agree with you for sure but if your family in the west never did either for you then your family has a problem ok most westerners will help out and good people care in the west just look at how we take care of the poor.

Thais not give a shit about some of the old people who have to sell  rubbish things to make a thai bht .

i have seen it first hand ok .

Hi G M&M, yes there is quite a difference in my family here and in USA - my family here is available & there is proximity - my family in USA is scattered and incredibly busy... their careers are their life. Which is fine - they are bright people, that is their choice.

You say -  "good people care in the west just look at how we take care of the poor."

This implies to me that the poor are well taken care of - is that what you are saying? I think if I remember correctly, you are not from USA, NZ? OZ? -

In NYC, people live on the streets, homelessness is a major problem, tent cities and poverty exist in abundance throughout the USA. It has been many years since I last lived in NYC, but everyone knew the days that the hospitals emptied out the mental wards... the streets filled with disoriented people, no toilet facilities for them etc...

I live near a small city here and there is no hunger as anyone can get a meal at the local Wat - nothing much in the way of homeless either. In the west, I see desperate poverty - here, I do not. Some do not have $$, but they have a place to stay and food...

Hi mate ok I not know about the U S , I am from Australia we have homeless as well but most of them want to be like that .

i seen people in thailand sleeping on the streets as well .

the poor in my country want to be that way but most work very hard like I did , but we still help out the homeless.

I have seen here in the village how bad people live and it is not that  nice .

Australia has just 25 million people , not a lot so we are the lucky country , lots of ex Australia on  TV disagree with me but up to them .

AND one more thing about here you not see a lot of  disabled people and why is that ? , I am not sure but I hate to think what happens to them here .

we are  multicultural and we don't  discriminate will I don't.

thailand is ok but thailand just wants our money not us , look how hard it is to have a visa here and what you have to do to stay on it is a joke .

i can take my partner to my country and after 5 years she becomes Australia if she wants to no bullshit .

Not like here , and she can buy land and a home if she wants to .

I like thailand yes but just to come and go I am one of the lucky ones homes in both countries.

thai people care yes about there family's but not about other thai people that is why thailand will never change till people care about  One another and make it a great  Country not a good country and it can become a great country when people start care about other people.

not just family .

Hi G. - Well, I do not know much about Australia either - I hear some nice things - but I think comparisons are difficult... and I know I could not make them about USA & Thailand too - different places, different cultures... different laws for different reasons.

I think most of the disabled in my area, probably stay at home... I always thought it was funny that they have so many disabled parking spaces because disabled here do not often drive. When I do see elderly and disabled, they are accompanied and helped by family.

I have seen people sleeping on the street, but only in Bkk, drunk or drugged...

Hard to have a visa? I guess, I just don't see it. It seems incredibly easy compared to what a Thai might have to deal with in visiting most Western countries. The requirements seem pretty minimal to me. Once a year I go to Imm. w/my bank book - surely it is their right to make sure a foreigner does not become totally destitute here. That is not asking much. And I send them a letter every 90 days... it takes me 20 minutes and 60 baht... it is only a very small inconvenience.

Buying land - it is a small country and the populace is not particularly wealthy by world wide standards. I would guess that if they opened it up for foreigners to buy land, it might price out their own people. I can understand this and am not inconvenienced by it. Back home, I was taxed pretty heavily for the privilege of owning land.

About them not wanting us?? I hear people complain but have never experienced this. Well, I think in making it easy and inexpensive for us to stay here, that is enough. Some people want them to change their laws and culture and speak English and be just like home. I chose to come here and enjoy the differences. I totally accept that their laws are their business and they do not owe me an explanation.

I am a guest. I actually find it a privilege that I can choose to live here. I am thankful for that. Not everyone can choose what country to live in... most Thai cannot.

In 2014: 48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 32.8 million adults and 15.3 million children. 14 percent of households (17.4 million households) were food insecure. 6 percent of households (6.9 million households) experienced very low food security.

No one starves in Thailand.  If you want food or a place to stay the Wat will take care of you.

America is quite a bit more racist and dangerous than Thailand take a look at the current situation in football and politics.

Ok good you  seem happy .

on the land thing I can tell you this me as a land own in Australia not thailand as I can't own land I would not come here and buy up lots of land as there is no  Capital gain like back home in my country .

The visa thing here is ok I not have a problem with it , because I go home and do it .

But thailand needs to change the way it dose there visa for  foreigners because can you imagine how much money is put into Thailand  though foreigners .

yes the tax thing on land I pay as well but the return I get from my house and land tax is very ,very good so I put up with it .

and on the tax thing thailand needs to try and make people here who rep the  System off though not paying  taxs is a joke that is why the thai government can't help out its old people and the  disabled .

like I say thai people not care about thai people that is why the drivers on the road are so bad , but I think this government now it trying to change the way people drive it will take time but never to late to change.

not all Thais , not want us mate just some of them .

like back home some  races are not  wanted .

But in the last 3 years I have seen thailand become  very expensive , not like it was 7 years ago.

I still will come and go here because I have a very good thai lady now and I do it for her , I have had my bad ones but this new one is very good and we get on very well .

But no homes , cars , gold , land , free money, she will have to work for it not me .

Back in my country, I help her out yes with a great life but if she wants to have all those things she will have to do it with hard work like I did .

If she puts in to my life and takes care of me like she dose at the end of my life she will be very well off and in our time together she can make her life in the future very good , if she wants to work hard and make good money back in my country.

so as long as you are happy in the land of  smiles , I am happy for you .

Hi, I came hear to live mainly because of the cost of living and my gorgeous girl. I am still relatively a new comer here and I am still feeling my way. There are things here that I don't like, however, I chose to live hear and have to except the way of life here.

Every country has its problems big and small, and yes, Australia has its own issues, however I would never put down my country as it gave me a good life and would do it all over again, with maybe some minor changes. If you look at what is happening around the world now with war, terrorism, mass shootings, etc  I think Australia is still the lucky country for most people. I served in the Military for 21 years to protect our great country and would not hesitate to do it again.

Cheers
