BANGKOK: -- The Labor Department has announced the arrest of 50 Chinese nationals and a Malaysian on charges of working illegally without a permit and other irregularities.

All those arrested were in the offices on the 20th and 21st floors of ZTE Thailand Co Ltd Thailand, reported Daily News

The company is a phone and phone accessory importer in the Empire Tower on South Sathorn Road.

Some 32 people were working in jobs not specified in their work permit that calls for up to 20,000 baht in fines.

While 19 others had no work permit at all and were on tourist visas - they face 5 years jail or fines between 2,000 and 200,000 baht.

The owner was also arrested and all were taken to Yannawa police station to be fined and prosecuted according to the law.

Laundry room operation?

What phone and parts importer needs 51 foreigners?

My guess is there are lots of illegal Chinese businesses going on and the same old corruption in acquiring citizenship as there always has for Chinese people. Thailand's visa and citizenship history is ignored when it comes to Chinese.

If this is about the telecommunication equipment ZTE Corporation which is a multi national company from china than I highly doubt that this is any money laundering. Probably someone in charge at the labor department did not get enough in his brown envelopes anymore..

See IBM and Apple. Multinationals with no need to have foreigner staff of such a number in their office.

Maybe, they need to update the number of job vacancies on their web page http://203.146.208.152/content/profile/zte/contact.jsp?id_emp=5811&name=ZTE+(Thailand)+Co.%2C+Ltd.+&count=13&p=5&code=!

I see a pic with the words 'Business' and 'Currency' in the link given by you.

An indication of illegal online currency trading?

So it was probably Steve Jobs gave them an anonymous tip at meditation parading for duty meeting..

A friend of mine just told me that people are being arrested for working on their own boats including the crew even though they have foreign flags. It is illegal to employ Thais for this job as they need a special certificate to work on a boat from the country the boat is registered in this apparently is international marine law. So how can this be seems that Thailand does not respect inter law I know off topic but involves labour department.
