BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has invoked Section 44 of the interim constitution to mandate the collection of DNA samples from all domesticated elephants in the country within 360 days.

Besides, he also required all these elephants must be marked to show their identities.

The latest attempt announced yesterday was to prevent and stop illegal wild elephant trade as the country could face trade sanctions under the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) if it takes no measures to stop the smuggling of wild elephants and unlawfully turn them to domesticated elephants.

Under the order, owners of all registered pet elephants with identification certificates, or unregistered pet elephants must undergo official DNA sample collection of their pets and obtain DNA certification documents.

All pet elephants must also marked.

All the process must be finished within 360 days or by October next year.

In addition to mandating elephant owners, the prime minister also ordered the ministries of agriculture, of natural resources and environment, and of the interior to jointly work out a new legislation to practically preserve and  protect Thai elephants within 90 days.

they increasingly give the impression of not caring or not having a clue - they really don't seem to understand the problem....any action is never off their own bat, it is always last minute (90days) and on the appearance of threats from CITES or other international organisations.

they are also being hauled over the coals as the guardian has exposed Thailand yet again as the hub for animals parts trading - the trade has shown no significant decrease at all depite all the publicity aimed at reducing it - why? Because Thai authorities just don't act.

My immediate question is how the <deleted> does one go about purchasing an elephant as a pet and having it registered? Can my local animal hospital do that and have it microchipped as well?

An elephant as a pet!? I've seen blokes with 5 feet wide freshwater rays in their garden ponds and assorted large avians but never did anyone of those entitled fools have an elephant. Or did I just not ask?

Au contraire, my friend. Thai authorities indeed do act: IN THEIR OWN BEST INTERESTS and that is where the action stops. If this place is on the verge of self-implosion now, I hate to see how things kick off after "the event."

Nothing more than an exercise in covering one's ass from getting a bad report card from the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES).

.

Cynical, but unfortunately right on the mark.

Yes, a big announcement, maybe they will even collect DNA samples, store the data, come up with a system to enable checking elephants regularly etc etc, ie. all those things which might constitute total concern for the  welfare of the animals. Enough to get those do-gooders off our back at least.

But, will this effort last? Nup, just a minor bump in the road on the way to happiness for the people. Soon it'll be back to normal - 'who gives a stuff?'.

And even more unfortunately, this attitude exists in most of the world out there as well as Thailand.

Sorry to present such a depressing view, but one must face reality - it is what it is.
