BANGKOK: -- Consumer’s index for the month of September was registered at 106.68, representing an increase of 0.38 percent from the same period last year or an increase of 0.04 percent from August, said Ms Pimchanok Workkhorporn, deputy director of Office of Trade Policy and Strategy of the Commerce Ministry.

She added that the September index showed that inflation rate had increased steadily for six consecutive months averaging 0.02 percent increase per month for the past nine months.

The increase in inflation rate was attributable to spending increase in food and non-alcoholic drinks by 1.47 percent and 0.24 percent decreased spending on other consumer goods such as pork meat, vegetables, eggs and household food.

Inflation is only 0.38%. But why have the prices of pork and chicken risen 20%?

Are they using different calculators?

Depends on where you shop and who does your shopping?

Chicken and pork are my key meat for my restaurants and have risen by huge margin like you said. Whether Tesco, Big C or your neighborhood talat, prices have gone up a lot. Some blamed that on the hot weather which reduce breeding. Not sure of that. More a supply and demand outcome. Is Thailand exporting too much.

Calculators?

No.

Wet finger method.

Oh I thought the economy and everything was improving, according to official statements?

Improving or not, I suspect profiteering by some big corporations...

Remember the jacked up prices of pharmaceuticals in the US?

Numbers are so confusing... I should just listen to the government, who seem to be confident about everything all the time.

Inflation is calculated on a basket of goods (determined by spending habits in the country) given a weighted average and using particular retailers. There is both a CPI and a RPI. Goods which fluctuate rapidly e.g oil are often excluded from the inflation calculation. As inflation is a sustained rise in the average price of goods and services over time the regional anomalies or the spike in chicken and pork prices will have an effect on the value.
