PM Prayut has high hopes for new government reps dealing with southern violence

BANGKOK, 4 October 2016 (NNT) - The Prime Minister has high hopes for success by the newly-appointed representatives of the government, who have been tasked with finding solutions to the long running violence in the country’s southern border provinces.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha recently endorsed the appointment of a 13-member special government team, which is expected to find sustainable peace initiatives for the strife-torn southern region.

It is reported that the new team is now working on its internal structure and work plans, in order to prevent its members performing overlapping jobs.

The new team’s office is expected to be set up in one of the three southern border provinces, which will make it more convenient for them to work and achieve peace as called for by government policies.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon said that the appointment of this new team and associated details are scheduled to be presented to a Cabinet meeting this week.

I have a better chance of getting pregnant than for these talks to succeed,

"With the new coordinating unit in place, the deputy prime minister [Gen. Prawit] believes the peace restoration process will be carried out faster." Sept. 22, 2016

Most of Prayut's strategy with the insurgency in 2015 and 2016 has been to treat the insurgents as common, localized criminals that have no national legitimacy. In fact Gen. Akanit Muansawat who led Prayut's peace negotiating team in 2014 referred to the insurgents as jone khaek (Muslim bandits). A peace restoration process is not the same as a peace negotiation process. The former is done unilaterally while the latter is done cooperatively.

Is the term "high hopes" the new version of "confidence in" , which was beginning to wear a bit thin?

Those offices will be the first target for the insurgency once they're established.

Is this a cracked record or something? Didn't the PM say all this before then the bomb went off  in the train?

When a bomb went off behind Thodeng train station in Tambon Thodeng (2016-03-14), government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the government will not tolertate any unlawful action, and will step up operations against insurgents, influential criminal figures, drug dealers, illegal oil traders and human traffickers. Under the prime minister’s order, the crackdown on these illegal activities must be effective within six months to restore peace in society and do away with all forms of violence and killing.1

The crackdown has been a failure.

Those who think killing a school teacher for teaching girls is a good idea are Muslim bandits and should not be negotiated with in my opinion. This mess will probably never end unless drastic measures are taken. I'm glad I am just a common man and don't have to make those decisions. I look forward to the first successful negotiation with a Muslim group.
