Hello Thai Visa forum,

Thank you for adding me to your forum!

I am looking for information concerning small to medium sized bird catching/hunting, specifically I want to find local people who hunt and could provide feathers of certain birds that are common but unique to Thailand.

Where should I start looking? Maybe there is a list of local hunting groups somewhere? Or if any members would possibly have a Thai relative who does absolutely legal bird hunting (usually catching for food in villages) please get in touch and I can provide a list of feathers I am looking for.

Please note that I am only looking for legitimate and legal ways of obtaining bird feathers, poachers and illegal traders will be dismissed.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi

Me and my family live up in the jungle so trapping and hunting are key to our survival, we catch and eat just about anything that moves. 2 weeks ago we lost a young buffalo calf, still born so we ate it along with the after birth, you can't get fresher than that. I still have the skin along with 2 rat skins loads of fish skulls including a giant snake head that would look well nailed in to a length wood with a brass name tag at the side. We have a pile of duck and chicken feathers and a 3 foot pile of snail shells. If you would like any of these items to add to your collection of dead animal parts please pm me....I have a family of chipmunks at the back of the house rare now in thailand and I'll catch one if you like then chop its tail off so you can make a key ring out of it then pull its claws out with a pair of pliers.

Hello Isanbirder,

Thank you for your kind reply.

Yes, I am familiar with this Act and I am arranging a visit to local DNP office as well as naturally checking everything through CITES.

But finding local sources is the really difficult part and that's why I wanted to see if there was anyone who would have any local knowledge, tips or maybe doing the actual hunting.

local sources are more than likely going to kill any bird you might be interested in. Why, because they hunt for food not for pleasure. Why can't you just enjoy birding? The connotations of  what you want to do is sick. just to collect a few feathers????? I personally hope you fail.

If you head south to the Thai Malaya border, there is a tribe of Semang pygmies around there. I am sure they would make you very welcome! at least you would be doing them a service, would make a change from eating dog.

edited to say, I forgot to mention they are head hunters. you have something in common.

Hello CharlieK,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm sorry if I have made you upset and I knew posting here would be pretty much the same as asking for these kind of comments. However that is not my intention.

Please enlighten me what is sick about the idea that someone - who will already kill and feed the bird to his family - uses the extra feathers to make a little better living for his family? Put little money towards the kids school fee maybe?

I'm not randomly asking anyone to go on a killing spree and that is what you are implying but I have no idea what your comment is based on. Also, your comment wasn't very helpful: I was asking a question and you responded only with your opinion on the subject.

I understand very well the limitations and legalities surrounding this matter very well but I also understand the sentiment that you kindly shared.

Still, I'm reaching out to this forum specifically since I'm hoping to connect with professional hunters or local people with knowledge on this matter.

Thank you for your kind regards and all the best in your life.
