Cargo Container Move

Recommended Posts

In a couple months, I'll be shipping a 7x7x20 foot cargo container from the US (Denver) to Thailand. It'll take about 5-6 weeks and the local shipper can only get it as far as BKK, so I need to get it to Chiang Mai. Do I need to clear customs in BKK or can it be done in CM? And if I need to get a local cartage company to truck it up to CM, does anyone have any experience (good or bad) to impart? Also...it's my understanding that I have to be personally there on its arrival and that I require a visa of a year's duration....if this is in error, please straighten me out. Thanks. walker

Customs clearance must be done in Bangkok as port of entry into the country.

Duty-free clearance as removal- our household goods is, as basic rule, only possible if you have a non-imm B and a work permit. Alternatively, if you are married to a Thai who stayed abroad for more than 1 year, it will be duty free in here name.

Restrictions apply for dutry free import of electrical/electr. items, only 1 piece per item. Ex. 1 TV, 1 fridge, etc.

Invoiced (or packing listg with prices) must show electr. items brand and model no., other items to specify the material, e.g Wooden chair.

Overland transportation to Chiang Mai is no problem, albeit not cheap. Depending on the nature of packing it might be cheaper to transfer after customs clearance to a truck to avoid that you have to pay for empty return of the container to Bangkok.

Shipping documents (bill of lading, invoice) must be in the name of the cargo-owner as shown in the passport.

Cover transport insurance house to house, which can be done in Asia usually cheaper than in the States.

Should you not qualify for duty-free or carry items in excess, duty will be assessed based on Thai customs value-information.

PM me your e-mail-adddress for more information if required

I know of an excellent customs/ clearance agency in Bangkok.

It took me a couple of muggings of the wallet by other agents till I found these.Very very efficient and reasonable rates.

They will if you wish arrange for the goods to be transported for you.

I had a shippment from the U.K delivered here in Chiang Mai last week and for the first time I didn't have to go to Bangkok they did it all by e-mail and a bank transfer of money to them, I of course had to send my passport to them, returned by registered mail.

The whole thing only took 4 days start to finish.

You can PM me if you want their address

Almost along these lines. I am looking to buy a used container that is in good condition. I plan to turn it into a computer learning center for my village. Anyone know the cost of a large or small one? It needs ot be able to house 5 computers.

Of course I would do the insulation, wiring, windows and air by myself or have someone do it for me.
