Vietnamese border police arrested two Cambodians – one a policeman, the other a soldier – on Saturday after they attempted to cross into Vietnam from Rattanakiri province carrying a kilogram of unidentified drugs, police said yesterday. The pair was identified as Chap Samean, a police officer attached to the 203 border unit, and An Bunthy, a soldier in the 102 border unit, according to an O’Yadav district police officer who declined to give his name.

“The two Cambodians were arrested on Vietnam soil and we can do nothing about the case,” he said, adding that he did not know what drugs they were allegedly trafficking as police had not received the information from the Vietnamese yet. “Both of them were already sent to Jia Lai province. When they were arrested, they were found with one kilogram of drugs.”

An officer at the provincial police headquarters, who also declined to give his name, said that provincial police were overseeing the case in Cambodia. He declined to comment further and referred questions to police chief Ngoun Phoeun, who declined to comment.   In a separate case, police in Preah Vihear province arrested a man carrying more than 140,000 methamphetamine pills in Tbeng Meanchey district.
