Clashes erupt as Pakistan's prime minister faces mounting calls to quit

Clashes have erupted on the streets of the Pakistani capital Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as pressure mounts on the country’s prime minister to resign over corruption allegations.

 

Police moved in with tear gas against stone-throwing supporters of cricketer-turned-opposition politician Imran Khan.

 

They have been rallying in defiance of a government ban on demonstrations.

 

Khan – who accuses officials of placing him under virtual house arrest – said he will go ahead with plans to shut down Islamabad next Wednesday in a bid to topple Nawaz Sharif.

 

“As this nation is now standing up, I challenge you (the government) to bring in more police officers or do what you can. You can’t stop the flood of humans on 2 November. You can’t ever stop them,” said Khan, who is Chair of the Tehreek-e-Insaf party.

 

Sharif has been under pressure since relatives were named as holding offshore bank accounts in leaked documents from a Panama law firm.

 

He is refusing to quit and says he will face investigations to prove that he and his family are not involved in corruption.

This morning get it was quiet on the roads but there is heavy build up of police and rangers. Barricades are also being given set up for what seems to be the inevitable clash with authorities.

It does seem many many of the political elite are somewhat, shall we say, "shady" in the personal financial dealings.

 

This guy, "dodgy" Dave Cameron with his tax morals lectures, Hilary and her family "charity", etc etc etc.

 

Then lots of ex-politicos get nice jobs with banks and financiers in the later years. 

 

Seems a world phenomena now information is much more available and communicable.
