TOT seeks backing for 10-digit numbers

BANGKOK: -- STATE TELECOM agency TOT has asked private telecom operators and the government to help financially support its plan to upgrade nationwide fixed-telephone numbers to 10 digits from the current nine digits, TOT president Montchai Noosong said.

He added that the state agency is unlikely to be able to afford the cost of the upgrade of Bt21 billion. 

Montchai said that mobile-phone operators would mainly benefit from the upgrade to the 10-digit number, as it would increase mobile phone numbers. However, TOT’s fixed-telephone service will not gain any benefit, given it is a less popular service, he said.

Thailand:  population 67 million.

Possible number of 10 digit 'phone numbers:  10, 000 million.

That's almost 150 'phone numbers for every man, woman and child.

 

Perhaps TOT should manage its existing 'phone numbers better, rather than impose this cost and inconvenience on the public.

What a waste.  Many chances to spend for better purposes.

German, about 80 million people and not really an underdeveloped country in telecoms:

8 significant digits and I am not aware of upgrade plans.

Before coming up with these ideas I would suggest they read some information theory. That way they won't need these stupid ideas.

Right now they are in line with the E164 standard which everyone else in the world follows. If it is good enough for far larger countries then it should be good for Thailand

They have to factor in that all the number combinations with "4" in them will remain unsold.  Any number with "8" in it will be already allocated...

That is not really an issue. If they understood Information Theory they would know they can use the leading 0 and get what they need. I assume you know information theory so it should be self explanatory to you

Stuff and nonsense.  There are loads and loads of telephone numbers already out there containing a "4".

Even if you mean starting with "4" it is wrong.

Fixed line numbers all over Isan start with 4 (042, 043, 044...).

They could handle it much better but they have no idea about numbering schemes. International standards do exist unfortunately it appears no one in Thailand knows about them
