New university admissions system for 2018

BANGKOK: -- A NEW, streamlined university admissions system will take effect from 2018 – if approved by the government, the Council of University Presidents of Thailand (CUPT) said on Sunday.

 

It will incorporate systems for quotas, clearing-house and direct admissions. 

Speaking as CUPT chairman, Mahidol University president Udom Kachintorn said the new system would solve the often expensive problem of students taking too many university entrance exams, as well as too much emphasis on tutoring schools rather than normal classes.

He said students would be able to apply for a quota system, with university places reserved for specific students such as those living in areas around a particular university or those having special abilities.

While bribery still remains a very viable, and widespread option it won't improve anything. The amount of exams students must do is absolutely obscene. I have a good relationship with many of my M6 students, the ones that really care are sick with worry and stressed to the hilt cramming for a multitude of different tests at the same time.

This is one of the times I wish Thailand looked overseas at how it is done in other nations. Here it is simply not healthy in its current state

My gf is an English teacher in a Bangkok high school. Out of boredom and casual interest I sometimes watched her mark test papers. 

These test papers seemed to be nothing more than posed questions with a series of answers all of which were incorrect except one. All students had to do was tick the correct box. Never anywhere did I see students having to be creative and express their own thoughts or opinions or provide written answers other than one word answers. Never did they seem to have to go through logical thought processes to arrive at the right answer.

Therein lies the answer to the shortcomings of Thailand's education system. Students are progressively having the skill of developing initiative taken away from them. And that is an important quality they will come need in later life.
