FPO warns of sham loan programs

BANGKOK, 1 November 2016 (NNT) – The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) of the Ministry of Finance has warned members of the public to be wary of unfounded claims of state programs offering low interest loans via private clubs or groups.

After recording a spike in inquiries concerning low interest loan programs from private groups and clubs being touted as sponsored by the FPO via its 1359 hotline, the office has asserted to the public that it does not offer any such loans and that government policy to assist low income earners does not involved such programs.

FPO Deputy Director-General Pornchai Theerawech has urged members of the public be wary of those coaxing them into loan programs that offer high credit lines at low interest rates with maturities of up to 10 years, especially those that allow for application using only an identification card or other personal documents. He asked that citizens carefully study the terms of such programs and to not sign any documents that do not clearly outline their conditions. The FPO warns that entering into such programs may result in informal debt and legal issues.

The office has affirmed that citizens should contact its 1359 hotline before pursuing any loan programs to make sure they are state sanctioned.
