I entered the Kingdom on 3 March 2016  on a 90 day Non-O. Within a week I opened a bank acct and deposited 400K Baht. At around 85 days I applied for a 1 year extension of stay based on family. I was given another month while the application was 'under consideration' [waiting for home inspection] .  A the end of this period I was given an 11 month extension [I guess it cost me a month for the 'consideration'

My question is how far in advance [60/90 days?] does my bank account need to be fully funded?  And based on what date in the process?

Thanks

You got a one year extension that started from the date your 90 day entry ended. The under consideration period allow you stay after your permit to stay ended.

The money needs to be in the bank for 2 months for every extension.

  • If you entered on March 3rd, and extended the 90 days by one year, you should have been given permission to stay until May 31st 2017. Total 1 year and 90 days.
  • The money needs to be in the bank for at least 2 months before the date you apply for the next extension.

You were near the end of your 90 day stay - the extension started at the end of that permitted stay for a period of one year.  The 30 day review period is standard for all marriage extension of stay applications - you can apply 30 days early if it makes you feel better using permitted stay you already have rather than what you are asking for.

Thanks for your replies   Indeed May 31 2017 is stamped in my passport. I'll to up my bank balance >60 days before that.

  • Be careful as it is a minimum of 2 months (not 60 days) before the day you apply (not the renewal date).
  • You can apply within the last 30 (maybe 45) days. The new extension will start from the end of the old regardless of how early you apply.

If you applied for the extension on May 15th the money would have to be in your account on or before March 15th, and day 1 of the new extension would be June 1st.

Just listen to Ubonjoe everaything here is not relevant or exactly the same. He know everything you need to know about your visa, and if you have any kind of doubt more. just send him a private email and he will always do what he can to help you.

I never thought the cash on deposit and refresh requirements made much sense, but now I think I understand it.  As an American citizen, I probably wouldn't do it because it means I would have to report the over 10K USD in a foreign bank account.  But neglecting that, putting the cash, let's say 800k baht for one person makes some sense.  You put the money in Thailand, the officials see it.  Now you are free to use the money and spend it down and use it to live.  Then as the time for the retirement extension approaches you top off the account.  Then you start the cycle all over again.  I can see how the Thais would like that because the money is proofed to be in Thailand and presumably you are living off of it, spending an average of 2,000 USD per month depending on the exchange rate.  Top it off at the appropriate time and repeat.  I personally favor the monthly income method, but now I think I understand the 800k cash method

Oh, dear! Yes I know that. That´s why I gave my opinion and recommendation.

It´s just very sad that you always must understand things in the wrong way.

A recommendation! Okey?? Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

Personally I think a challenger or two to Ubonjoe in terms of provision of relevant and timely information free from error makes for a healthy competitive environment that benefits the users of this information. That's us!

Look what happened to Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali in the end. Nobody is infallible nor immortal.

Yes, you are right! The more cooks the better soup. Just joking!

How ever I just believe that you always quick and clear get the facts right. Of course everyone can be wrong, but there is always a minimal chance of that regarding to other comments here.
That´s just why I made that rekommendation.

The comment was actually, even if not told in the text, pointed at the OP. Really not a comment for open and off topic discussion.

Be aware that your first extension must have the funds in your bank account for that 60 day period you mentioned.

if you intend to renew your annual extension, for your 2nd year renewal, that period may be 3 months or 90 days.

Only your first year has a 60 day seasoning period, subsequent annual renewals may require a 3 month "seasoning" period.

That is the rule.

You wrote info for an extension based upon retirement. The OP is applying  for one based upon marriage and which is 2 months for every extension application.
