November 6, 20169 yr Plan to cut rice production By PETCHANET PRATRUANGKRAI THE NATION Long-term strategy aims to deal with the recurring problem of falling rice prices; more cash crops to be promoted BANGKOK: -- THE government is pushing for a comprehensive set of long-term measures to reduce the rice acreage and promoting alternative crops to prevent a repeat of the current rice price slump. Both short-term and long-term measures will be discussed at a second special meeting today of the National Rice Policy Committee, which will be chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, as the government is under pressure to help rice farmers hit hard by a record low paddy prices. Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives Ministry permanent secretary Thirapat Prayoonsithi, who yesterday held a meeting of senior agriculture officials, said the ministry would implement proactive measures to encourage farmers to grow alternative cash crops along with rice in a bid to reduce the overall rice acreage. November 7, 20169 yr Maybe they should legalize krathom and marijuana? Not only would it boost the agricultural sector, but also the tourism sector.

November 7, 20169 yr Hallelujah!! The sooner Thailand loses it's no. 1 exporter of rice tag the better. They should ban the use of chemical fertilisers and use of all 'cides' of any description and grow organic niche strains and keep them as brown rice instead of removing the goodness and turning it into nutrient free pure simple carbohydrate!!

Exactly! Don't compete on the worldmarket for price, go for high quality and let them pay for it. Brown rice can be nice if accompied by a nice fatty sauce/sidedish like coconutmilk curry. Just sell that curry as well and use fresh herbs only and sell it as a paste. Rubber can also be sold abroad if made into good quality products...

Yes great idea let's do what a farang wants. Screw the thousands of rice farmers who will have no income not being able to afford your nice niche strains of rice but you will be happy.

In Europe they pay very high prices for organic and non-genetic modified produce from the land. They better go for quality instead of quantitiy.

OK, what do you think they should do - oh, sorry, they shouldn't be taking advice from a farang so you had better not reply. Just let them carry on with what they are doing but without subsidies and outside help as I don't like my taxes going towards farmers who are a liability for the country!! They should do what their children are doing and turn their back on rice farming and get a proper job that provides an income!!

Is that correct children turning there backs on rice farming are you sure!!!. A proper job!!!! so rice farming in your opinion is not "proper work" go try it think yo might just get your eyes opened. Wherever you go to work here USA UK EU countries you pay tax part of the tax goes to subsidies farmers all over that given country. Christ farmers are paid in uk to leave the fields alone money for doing nothing. So you were paying towards farmers like it or not. As for not subsidising the rice farmers now It would cause great hardship and suffering. But Luckly enough the Thai government recognise this and has as a THAI government responded in the posative.
November 7, 20169 yr I always assumed - which I probably shouldn't do - that it's more expensive to produce white rice than brown because although they are the same grain, to produce the former you have to remove the hull, the bran and the cereal germ. Would this not drive up the cost of production? Also, at least brown rice has some nutritional value. Anyway, I'm not a rice farmer so I don't really know. Just an honest question.

Guess it's the law of the quantity speaking here. Brown should be cheaper if bought from a small farmer because it's less work to produce but for the big boys it's a lot of extra work for a small amount of rice. I've seen a documentary where the reporters went investigating where the most expensive peanuts of the world were grown. They ended up somewhere upcountry in China where the farmers did everything like in the middleages. They didn't even have fertilizer or any chemical and never had. They sold the peanuts cheap as chips but the commerce made them the top notch organic peanuts for the highest price of all. Business is business but don't tell that to the Thai farmers, let them watch soapseries and Tukkie on tv...

Nice idea, but what will the farmers live on for 5 years while waiting for their rice paddies to become organic?

I wouldn't mind watching it.
November 7, 20169 yr Did anyone bother to read the article? Do you think it is bad that they now will try to make a long term plan so this can be sorted in the future? I don't say that they will manage, but it sure better trying then sitting with you thumbs up your a..s doing nothing.
November 7, 20169 yr I think thailand is out of the major rice player game. Yingluck scheme finished it off and improved india & vietnam export. Time move on to other crops and have above board schemes to help the transition .
