We are three university students coming from Australia Sydney. We are going to be staying in Thailand for 3 weeks.

We just want to do a bit of shopping and chill out on some small secluded beaches islands.

I have been looking online for best prices for hotels in Bangkok. I was interested in hotels close to the center and with a good star rating, 3+.

I found this,

http://www.grandtowerinn.com/rama6/index.html

The cost is 1700 for a twin room with 500 for an extra bed.

I have no idea where this is in relation to the city center; can some one give me an idea?

If any one knows of a better place to stay, that’s cheaper then that please let me know.

So far we have planned to stay for 3 days in Bangkok then make our way down towards Ko samui, spend about a week there, have a look at some islands and beaches.

After this we want to go Krabi and Phuket with a few days left over for some final shopping in Bangkok.

We have just made this plan up from suggestion from people, any things you would like to recommend would be great.

Thanks for the help.

Will let others with more recent hotel stay experience advise on other alternatives but that hotel is well outside of any tourist area and is not cheap by Bangkok standards. I would be looking further myself. You could use one of the web services to narrow your hotel range down and then search on that specific hotel for the best price. One such service has links at the bottom of these pages.

There is no equivalent of Martin Place/Pitt Street in BKK. In terms of being "central".

The hotel you said, is close (close: BKK is 3 times biger than Sydney) to the tourist attractions and to the SkyTrain. Looks nice. If it is within your budget, go for it. Cheaper places may save you some money but it is only 3 days, it won't ruin your holiday.

I know of some cheaper (1 day in your hotel gives you 3 days there, not Khao Sarn Rd) places but they are not better.

The Grand Tower Inn is a bit out of the way, and not as close to the BTS Skytrain as you might assume.

Asiarooms.com has the Grand Tower Inn for less $$$

For a first timer, that wants "some" comfort and space for the 3 of you, I would suggest getting a suite room at Bayoke Sky Hotel @ AU$ 58 for all 3 of you.

You're not too far from anywhere then.

MBK is a pretty cool place to shop and eat and get a manicure and....

Get in a taxi, tell him to turn on his meter (if he hasn't already), and say M-B-K.

Thorntree at the Lonely Planet website has a good FAQ, you should go have a read of it too.

Oh yeah and Jatujak (chatuchak?) markets, if you happen to be in BKK on a Saturday is not to be missed.

Had another look at the hotels website, turns out I wasnt even looking at the under 25USD prices.

Found some ok looking hotels, wanted to know what you guys think of this one.

It's in the centre of the sex industry catering for Japanese, Chinese and Koreans. Also, the Poseidon, an upscale brothel for Thais is nearby.

Just look at their check-out times.

The location - not very convenient. In Sydney terms, it's like Strathfield.

Quite far from anything.

True, a K-mart kind of shop (Robinson) is there, if that is what make you go to Thailand.

Look, not that I have any interest in this place, moved out 3 months ago, it is where my wife (to graduate in April next year had lived at) and hundreds of Bangkok University students are still there...check it out: KTA Mansion...google it.

It's not a hotel but they do short term stays..600B per night per room.

A walking distance to Ekkamai sky train station. And they have probably the best Thai food restaurant in the area.

Their phone number is : +662 7123-400

Believe hotel is set back from Ratchadapisek Rd as have never seen it in my travels and this is well outside of any tourist area also - but is a new nightlife area and on the subway line so it should be at least as good as the other location and probably nearer to subway/BTS that Rama 6 (which is well west of the skytrain line. It is not the same standard as your first hotel but for the price looks like good value and expect you will not be staying in hotel that much.

The center of Bangkok is seldom defined but in my view it is Radjamari in the area of the old World Trade Center (now called Central World).

Sort of explains the 2400 for 4 days twin room. This is also the exact amount of time we are intrested in staying.

I picked it from the list only because it was 3 1/2 star rating.

@ think_too_mut, I did a google on the KTA Mansion, only found some like thai equivalent yellowpages listings. I need somthing I can be sure to book, as my flight is on monday night.

We can afford the $50-70 a night but if we can find somthing for cheaper we would like to save money. Like and universty student does :o

Not sure if this link is going to work for you, but all I did was search for all hotel in bangkok and sort by price with under 25USD

should show 16 hotels.

Any recommendadtions from this list?

That kind of budget would lend you to the places better than what I suggested.

Just if you want to entertain your friends, Thais working at McDonalds get about 65-70 cents per hour.

based on that list I would say (without knowing what the conditions of the rooms are, just based on location):

P&R residence (that is on same street as bangkok's most famous 5star hotel, the Oriental. it is not extremely far from the sky train, and equally close to getting to silom (which has restaurants and some form of nightlife --what kind you can explore :o

wall street inn and suriwongse hotel would be somewhat of the same area. wall street i vaguely recall seeing...they can be a bit old i think

those in china town areas are ok, (white orchid and the china town) but its nearer to the grand palace area, and khaosarn road, but probably not the modern side of bangkok that youngsters might enjoy?

some other recommendations are:

http://www.theatlantahotel.bizland.com/

not new, but its very convenient in sukhumvit 2, near the sky train, and easy access to shopping area, night life and restaurants in and around the area

the other is a guest house in sukhumvit 11 (clean and well maintained) in the same street as bangkoks happening night club: the Bed and Qbar

cheers, and enjoy bangkok :D

I've stayed at the Classic Place Hotel in Pechburi. Its a 3 star hotel, and works out just under £10 a night (around 700 baht). Classic Place

Precision Reservations is a good site to book through.

Not really much around the immediate are of the hotel but it is literally 2 minutes walk to the underground.

Hope this helps.

text me if you want a hotel walking distance to the mbk &siam center.

800bht/night upwards.

This place is like flats people acctualy live there for a longer period of time. check in is at 12.00

U can leave your luggage in the lobby on your way out of bkk..

Always been safe for me

or you can always pay aroand 150 -250bht around koh san road if its your first visit to thailand might be ok for you...... buissy street is the mildest term I can think off heheh

But if you only have 3 weeks ..hmmm why dont u get some where inbetween the train staition and koh-san road....so you dont have to spend to mutch time in taxis on your way out of there to travell further then bkk.

hope you enjoy thailand.
