PHUKET: -- Two men were taken into police custody yesterday (Nov 15) after officials from the Livestock Department seized over 1,000 kilograms of illegally imported beef from two addresses in Rassada.

At 1pm, more than 30 officials from the Livestock Department Region 8 office, which covers the Chumpon, Ranong and Phuket provinces, and officers from the 41st Military Circle were led by Phuket Department of Livestock Development Chief Pornchai Inkamdee to seize a total of 1,342kg of illegally imported beef in Rassada.

Two men, Borakas Torthip and Chaiyong Kongchamnan, were later taken to Phuket City Police Station to face charges of possession or transportation of illegal beef, and the illegal importation of beef into the Kingdom.

And... all that beef is left in the back of a pickup truck parked in the sun.

So not only seized but probably spoiled as well. What  a waste.

What a total waste of time and money.

After the officials have taken their bits of beef, the rest will be wasted.

Illegally imported beef WOW crime of  the century.:post-4641-1156693976:

Pomthai and colinneil: have you ever thought that this beef might come from places with widespread deseases amongst cows? If it's imported illegally it's safe to assume that it never got checked and has unknown origins.

There's already a huge lack of hygiene when it comes to food and you two are suggesting to ignore this problem even more.

1000kg of beef isn't exactly a huge amount to waste. Phuket probably consumes a multiple of that per day.

I think if this had happened in Australia there would be serious jail time being required.

Oh common. Im finding it harder to get a good steak at the monent. everythings like rubber. The dry Angus burgers from mcds about the best in my local area. What a waste..........

Decent Thai beef is difficult to find.

Indian beef even more so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And it WAS from India!!!!  Scary in every way.  Possibility of being disease carrying?  How did it get in here? etc etc.

I had a piece of Thai beef once.  After 5 days and 14 chainsaws later I settled for a bowl of mama noodles.

Really Indian Beef!  Once again I shall have to pass.

Destined for dodgy Pattaya Indian restaurants and wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole.

If we want decent beef then we head down to Makro and purchase prime imported for quite a reasonable price.  Never gone wrong.

Lets hope the story is not just a load of bull.

just put it in the sun.

Department of Livestock Development checking DEAD stock..

Thais don't eat much beef for the same religious reasons most Indians don't, because Buddhism is derived from Hinduism. Most Indians who DO eat beef I would guess, would only do so if it was halal killed.  Your comment re Indian beef exports was a surprise to me so I checked Google and you are quite right.  Even more surprised.

no worse than buying thai beef in a market.
