Satun Geopark to be proposed as global geopark site

 

SATUN, 16 November 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) is planning to propose to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to enlist Satun Geopark as one of the global geoparks. 

The DMR Director-General Tosaporn Nuchanong attended a meeting with Satun provincial authorities and several officials overseeing Satun Geopark to discuss how they are going to convince UNESCO to accept it as a global geopark site. 

Tosaporn said a working team would be appointed following the meeting to ensure that Thailand meets the requirements. The move to propose Satun Geopark to UNESCO was approved by the Cabinet last Tuesday. 

Satun Vice Governor Thammarong Kongwatmai said a plan for listing the geopark on UNESCO’s list of geopark sites has been formulated while the establishment of the working team is now underway. 

The public will be made aware of the move and English language training will be provided to local tour guides in case the site is endorsed by UNESCO within September next year. The endorsement will promote local economic growth and create jobs for people living in the vicinity of Satun Geopark.

I have never heard Satun Geopark before. Looks quite nice and might be worth of visiting.

Satun is beautiful, and really it is a clean, peaceful and definitely most liveable province in Thailand. I have worked there some years ago for a year, but I have to admit, I never heard of Satun Geopark.
