BANGKOK: -- The scrutiny committee tasked with deliberating two petroleum-related bills has no right to withdraw the two bills because they were approved by the National Legislative Assembly which has the authority to withdraw the bills, General Sakon Satjanit, chairman of the scrutiny committee, said on Wednesday.

He disclosed that the scrutiny committee had made a lot of progress in deliberating the two bills – the petroleum bill and the petroleum tax bill – but the job is yet to be completed.

Regarding a proposal by the civic groups that a national petroleum corporation should be set up to handle all matters about petroleum, General Sakon said that this issue would not be incorporated in the two bills because the matter is being considered by the government and the Energy Ministry.

He admitted that it is not an easy job to set up a national petroleum corporation as the matter must be carefully considered, taking into consideration the requirements for feasibility studies, budgeting and manpower management, among other aspects.
