BANGKOK — Those living in abject poverty will receive a government payout of 3,000 baht next month, the military government announced Tuesday.

The money will be paid one time to those with incomes of less than 30,000 baht per year who have registered for the program, junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha said at a news conference. The payout, along with coupons for public transport and other measures, was meant to subsidize the cost of living, he said.

It's called money laundering.  Government had to figure out a way to get the money to the elite so he's giving it to the poor who are in debt up to their eyeballs and those that aren't will likely squander it.  Either way, eventually the elite get the money and instead of looking like a windfall for the rich it's positioned as a act of kindness towards the poor.

Only half joking.

Could just imagine hell gates opening up with criticism if the previous government was to hand out free money. The opposition detractors will be diligently scrutinizing the constitution laws for a conviction for this vote buying populist act. Then again, Prayut is not the first to hand out free money. Ahbisit too gave out money when he launched his Strong Thailand program. Whatever happen to Prayut denouncement of populist policies of previous government!!!

Continuing to nibble at the edges of the issue, same as in many other countries rather than coming up with a gradual yet effective way to rebalance the wealth gap. Certainly not limited to Thailand but just as certain at the root of much of the more current political problems. Same as can be seen in the US election and earlier Brexit votes.

Throwing crumbs metaphor certainly comes to mind. When comes to narrowing the wealth gap, they chicken out. Wage increase suppressed, land tax reform delayed, distribution of budget continue to favour Bangkok, land eviction skewed, getting the vendors off payment poorly planned. Seem an attempt to keep the masses poor, uneducated and unrepresented.

At least every poor gets something instead of only rice farmer. Also this is not done to buy votes for an ellection.

Still it would be better if real plans were made to help them. But it does keep people happy with the junta.

Similarities to the rice deal?

Of course, it's exactly the rice deal except for people who don't grow rice.  It's a populist (and somewhat desperate) move designed to pacify the masses while some other, much larger, transfer of wealth takes place.  Much in the same way that Thaksin was constantly announcing government giveaways to the poor while shoveling mountains of cash into his own pockets.

It's no different.  It's just different players.

I have two sister in law here on the family farm and living in a very small village I did ask my wife if she knew about it and if she did mention it to her sisters but no real answer don't know if they ever heard about it from the chief of the village.

Is there a internet sight that I could verify for them??
