Two karaoke parlor (KTV) owners arrested on Monday night after raids on their premises in Kampong Thom province, as part of ongoing efforts to close brothels, have been been released without charge after agreeing not to offer such services in the future, police and court officials said yesterday. Military police, accompanied by prosecutor Meas Vathana from the provincial court, raided the two premises in Staung district which they believed to be doubling as brothels, a district police officer who declined to be named told Khmer Times.

“The military police from the province came and raided two karaoke parlors in the district which they accused of offering sex services,” he said.  He added that both KTVs had been in operation for more than 10 years and in addition to the two owners, a number of female staff had also been arrested and detained overnight before being released without charge on Tuesday morning. He declined to answer further questions.

Provincial military police spokesmen could not be reached for comment, but local media named the two owners as Ouk Ratana, 23, and Oeung Bunchay, 50, and said that more than 20 staff had also been rounded up and detained. Mr. Ratana could not be reached for comment, while Mr. Bunchay declined to comment on his arrest, before swearing at the reporter and hanging up.
