The Beeb have gone a long way from being a serious news broadcaster, a shadow of their former reputation for straight news reporting.

Come January, it's the USA that will have a demagogue for a leader with strong ties to Russia, while Cuba will have the better primary health care system of the two.  It's as if they've decided to exchange places.

ooh so well said !!!!

One of the extraordinary men of modern times.

While some ( probably many ) will dislike his politics, he liberated his land from dictatorship, American imperialism and the mafia. His biggest mistake was no doubt permitting Russian missiles to be installed, which IMO allowed the US to impose a severe embargo for many years. Were it not for that, I reckon his regime would have not been so extreme, and relations with the US could have been normalized many years ago.

Within Cuba, he is no doubt remembered with fondness and respect, which, IMO, is the only thing that counts.

Well he tried to have the missiles installed. Didn't happen.

The drift from socialist to capitalist or left to right is proven to be at least in part biological and comes with age.........people become less idealistic and critical in their thinking - they forget what they were trained to do at University and settle for an easy life which requires less thought and more calories - one symptom is a  loss of respect for the branches of the media that they now find themselves disagreeing with....in other words gents - you are old and the "mr Grumpy" hormones are  setting in.

castro originally approached US for help, but down the years the US has had a   PHOBIA of the word communism....this has prevented them from having a level-headed and productive foreign policy is many parts of the world and has lead to the deaths of millions at the hands of dictatorial regimes........

no-one will deny the faults of Castro or his achievements and these were uniquely achieved despite the unrelenting opposition and ignorance of one US regime after another...

Same for Uncle Ho.Just think how much better the world would have been if the Yank pollies could get past their hatred for socialism.

Agree ,...Been to Cuba 20 years ago, traveled around the country freely, was astonished to see that Cubans had free and excellent healthcare and education as well !!! and one of the highest literacy rates I ever witnessed 99.7% /99.8%...the US doesn't even make it in the 25 first country's. FYI...it's 45 th...

Best Regards

But you failed to see that the Cubans themselves where prohibited to check into hotels.

Touristing in Cuba ( possibly with out speaking Spanish) will give you any random impression you like.

Live there , different story.

Although many Cuban young ladies find their way into those hotels, to participate in Cuba's highest paid profession.

My mother lives on the Florida Keys, where to this day "highly literate" Cubans routinely wash up on the shore in their inner tubes, desperate to find a way to make a decent living.

Yup.

Medicine saved for the political elite.
Best doctors and equipment alike.

Not even light bulbs in the hospital during the worst times because people stole them.

Separate hospitals for tourists.

my experience is that is not true.....

you realise that is a non sequitur or false syllogism as  far as any arguments go?

I think, it was more an additional line under the agreement after the  Cuba crises: "The USA will never commit any hostile action anymore against Cuba. As THAT was the main reason, why Castro turned to the Sovjet Union.

My question to all Castro-lovers: "how many political prisones suffered how many days in his prisons under which circumstances ? "

Maybe you don't personally know any Cuban doctors nor have been to hospitals in Cuba.

My wife almost died in a Cuban hospital giving birth.

My mother in law suffered very much from a badly performed cataract eye surgery.

And the countless of people I know who just plainly died of malpractice and substandard.

Forget about finding a way to complain about that.

Sorry but I do and have more experience than you assume. however I don't like you rely on personal anecdote to come to conclusions - remember the plural of anecdote is not data.

Oh, well it is actually from the many observers such as UK politicians, the UN, and US health executives, all returning impressed and full of praise for Cuba's fully functioning health service despite the sanctions and lack of funds.

A lot of women almost die during child birth, that is why we do it in hospitals, they saved her though, right? Yeah, that would be something to praise them for, unless you wanted her dead.

Also cataract operations are a relatively risky one, about 1 in 50 result in serious problems.

The countless people you go on to mention will remain uncounted as they sound like embellishments to your previous two completely uneventful stories.

Deposed a dictator and just replaced him, kicked out the mafia and installed the communist version.  If communism in Cuba has been so great why have so many Cubans left, and how come you never here of people wanting to go and live there? Communism does not work, never has and never will. It held back Cuba for decades, imposed a totalitarian vice on the people and made their lives an utter misery. Hero? only if you think monsters, sexual perverts and socialist hypocrites are.

"Then there is the real Cuban system, the one that ordinary people must use — and it is wretched. Testimony and documentation on the subject are vast. Hospitals and clinics are crumbling. Conditions are so unsanitary, patients may be better off at home, whatever home is. If they do have to go to the hospital, they must bring their own bedsheets, soap, towels, food, light bulbs— even toilet paper. And basic medications are scarce. "

This was written by Jamie Suchlicki who was paid $6 million in US funds supposedly destined for Cuba to instead publish disparaging reports, none of it is in the slightest bit credible, it is US anti-Cuban propaganda.  I would prefer to go with the reports of the BBC, British government and the UN, all of which completely contradict Suchlicki's claims.

not to forget that he survived 8 US presidents who caused misery to the Cuban people.

Do you think the Cuban people blame him, or the 8 US presidents, for their misery?
