Exercise drive must not be a flash in the pan

Thailand needs a serious national agenda on promoting workouts

BANGKOK: -- We have seen it time and time again – powerful political or business figures in tracksuits, leading workout campaigns, be it jogging or aerobics, only for the activities to end up as an exercise in futility.

Now, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is embarking on a similar path and critics are, understandably, cynical. His “order” that Thai bureaucrats must exercise every Wednesday afternoon may be implemented, but will it really yield fruit?

Exercise requires determination and consistency or it will never work. Prayut’s order will face obstacles – from bosses who are afraid that official work may not get done, junior bureaucrats who are convinced the campaign is just another showpiece that would make them work extra time, and whoever is responsible for supplying or taking care of equipment and venues who doubt the seriousness of those involved.

This will not be sustained at senior levels anyway and the instant excuses of ' too busy ' etc have already been made available.

Of course important work should take precedence but it will be too easy for those with authority to order subordinates to attend while they unfortunately can't due to ' pressure of work '.

We will still see the PM and senior officials giving it their all but only at specially organised times when the media will, of course, be in attendance. Maybe they should also invite the cheer leading squad from the WHO to see their hero in action.

I saw the most ridiculous sight a few weeks ago. As I was driving along a soi, this guy came round the corner running, wearing running shoes and a tracksuit. With a lit cigarette in his hand. Only in Thailand.

 "...must exercise every Wednesday afternoon.."

And the rest of the week they will be consuming large amounts of sugar, processed foods, lying around watching soap operas and driving their motor vehicles down the street to pick up a pack of cigarettes.

This doesn't address children who seem to be just as inactive as their elders. Perhaps the schools need to replace singing with strenuous athletic activities and offer healthy meals along with some nutritional education.

That will happen when those cholesterol laden pigs fly.

I saw one in the moobaan who had a big ipad in his hand, every 10 meters he had to look at it. He was very determined though and looked like his life depended on his walking. To finish it off his shoes were size 45 and he was a small man.

My heart goes out to all those slim, superfit expats sitting on their bar stools for hours on end with nothing to look at over their beer bellies except lots of unhealthy Thais passing by. Hard life, ain't it?
