BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said on Tuesday that the Thai people need not have to prepare themselves for the accession to the throne of the new King because most of them have been living with the monarchical institution throughout their lives.

He noted that the issues regarding dress code and expression of well wishes to the new King were internal affairs “and today is just the beginning of the process.”

He said that both the cabinet and the National Council of Peace and Order performed an important mission of historical significance by starting the process of inviting the heir to the throne to access to the throne in accordance with the procedure stipulated in the Constitution and the related law 25 years ago.

And this is the first time that the procedure is implemented, said the prime minister.

He disclosed that the cabinet had formally notified the National Legislative Assembly about its decision of the new King and the NLA will eventually formally invite HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to become the 10th King of the Chakri dynasty.

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krea-ngarm has dismissed as groundless a widely-circulated rumour that government officials had been told to replace their black clothing to white to welcome the new King.

He insisted that the announcement of the Prime Minister’s Office dated October 13 requiring all government officials to observe one-year mourning for the passing of His Majesty the King by wearing black or uniforms when they report to work.

He called on members of the public to do likewise to observe one-year mourning although they are not required mandatorily to do so. He said the government had not yet decided about when officials and civilians alike should wear white clothing or any other shades.

Dr Wisanu explained that there are four mandatory steps to be taken regarding the procedure for the accession to the throne of HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The four steps are: firstly, the cabinet must endorse the successor to the throne and then inform the National Legislative Assembly; secondly, the NLA president will inform the lawmakers for acknowledgement of the cabinet’s decision; thirdly, the NLA president will have an audience with the Crown Prince and to invite him to succeed the throne and, finally, the NLA president will inform the public about the new King, he said.

After the completion of the four steps, the new King will be addressed as “Somdet Phrachao You Hua and, only after the coronation ceremony, he will be addressed as “Phrabaat Somdet Phrachao You Hua”.
