Cabinet meeting acknowledges measures to remove water hyacinth nationwide

BANGKOK, 30 November 2016 (NNT) - The cabinet meeting has acknowledged measures to remove water hyacinths nationwide on the Thai Environment Day, December 4th.

Prime Minister’s Office Assistant Spokesperson Thaksada Sangkhachan has announced that the cabinet meeting has acknowledged Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan's report on the issue of water hyacinth.

From latest surveys, officials determined that there were 6.2 million tons of water hyacinth throughout the nation, and initially scheduled the removal operation to proceed during October 2016 to March 2017, she said.

She went on to say that the water hyacinth removal campaign will be enacted nationwide on Thai Environment Day, December 4th.

Sure, this will go down in history as one of the "great achievements" of the ju...the current government!

Like the lottery- price, the beach- chairs....

:coffee1:

I believe furniture can be made from water hyacinth, so could be a big bonus for the appointed contractors.

Aren't water hyacinth used for purifying water ?  Aren't the klongs unbelievably filthy ?

Been here some years now and never get over phrases like acknowledged. The stumbling part comes when the word "funding" is used.

think they slow down the flow of water and as the army/government does not want to be sued for miss managing the floods it has to be seen to be doing something.

Another possible use may be feedstock for biomass power plants.

When I saw the headline, I just knew I had to drop everything and read the post :ermm:.

That's very funny. 555

And the water hyacinth will ignore the government and grow again.

Read about it next 4th Dec ..................

Biomass density of water hyacinth is low. Using it as fuel for energy production might not be feasible. Using water hyacinth as material for handicraft production on the other hand may have some future. They are doing that at Phayao province.

TIT!

There is only black or white.

They could take out SOME of the stuff and then regularly control the grow- back!

Better water- quality at the same time with better water- flow!

But that would take some real effort and thinking and not just lip-service at a government meeting with Jack, Jim and Johnny...

How about eliminating Crop Field Burning which is responsible for more deaths and illnesses than water hyacinths.

It's not not difficult to find the culprits who are doing the burning. Stevie Wonder can do it in his sleep. Just follow the smoke and either fine the person who is doing the burning, if he can be found, or the person who owns the lands where the fire/smoldering is occurring. A few hefty fines and some education about composting will go a long way. And, as far as the fires burning the forest floors to expose the mushrooms. The mushroom hunters can find another seasonal occupation that won't kill or sicken others.People can live without mushrooms. Living with diseased lungs and hearts is another story.

Would be great to get rid of them FOREVER.  Just pay people to bring them to the pigfarms or so...hippo's eat them as well.

turn it into compost/fertilizer for the farmers, then again that might be too simple for them

Send in the DSI to remove them

Thais dont care to listen to facts. Feel your pain!. Moved to a place a year ago that had bee visiting for many years in kanchanaburi and been smoked out round the clock mostly from charcoal manufacture and coming up now burning season. Mostly whats being done is illegal but thais dont care about people. I have 3opposing neighbours all dying from cancers right now with one of them coming to me and saying i was right about the dangers. I complained to officials again and was told to go f myself basically. I have had the local mayor send people to fire shots at the back of my house to scare us away and organize people to harrass my family around the clock and even follow us so they can go on with this illegal practice. Where i live its actually public servants setting the fires or family of with farms. They have a warped veiw of how to do things and are protected by corrupt officials, police and defemation laws. The corruption and unqualified officials are way out of control so much that saying something can result in death threats which i have had. May even come true..

Dumb people seem to be fascinted by fire. And for any idiot that thinks burning forests brings more mushrooms it doesnt. Burns all foilage the takes up water and holds the dirt together basically. What we have here in kanchanaburi is more flash flooding and less mushrooms per year and almost no forest left in some places and certainly no wildlife apart from pigeons but there is idiots that would argue this.. my house backs on to 200rai of public land that my local mayor allows people to drive in in trucks and take trees, bamboo, animals, mushrooms, rocks and so on. Its crazy. Not to mention all the land encroachment with farming on govrnment land.

But what can you do when theres a collective iq of zip probably as a result of smoke exposure as children.

Sorry for the lil off topic post...

So, what's the difference between Water Hyacinth (https://is.gd/vln0kF) and the junta ???

One has potential for a wide number of positive initiatives, while the other is just a noxious weed that seems to be choking much of Thailand, and needs to be removed !!!
