Thought you might have got a reply from someone who is currently in Phuket by now but when I was there the nearest point is Ranong and across to Burma. It's about 4 hours by road and can be done in a day if you drive. It can be done by bus but due to the schedule you may have to stay over.

The more interesting is to go to Malaysia. take a bus to Haad Yai (7 hours), then a bus(1.5 hours) or shared taxi (50 mins) to Padang Besar or taxi to Sadau(50 mins). There is a duty free shop at Sadau and a Malaysian market in Padang Besar. Go back to Haad Yai, have a cheap night there and back to Phuket in the morning.

You can use a Visa run company such as F1 Visa Runs contact at [email protected] or tele 076 282354 (according to the Phuket Gazette), I think they go to Ranong.

If you want to do it quick and easy why not use a cheap flight to KL or Singapore?

Whatever it must be better than being in Phuket at Christmas, it'll be bedlam.
