Bomb joke forces delay of Thai Lion Air’s flight in Hat Yai

 

 

HAT YAI: -- A Thai Lion Air's flight from Hat Yai to Don Mueang airport in Bangkok was delayed for two and a half hours yesterday following a bomb joke that forced the evacuation of all passengers and re-checking of all the luggage's on board.

 

The incident happened as Lion Air’s Flight SL703 was about to leave Hat Yai international airport for Don Mueang airport at 10.05am.

A hostess alerted the pilot immediately after she heard a group of about six passengers talked about a bomb in the aircraft’s luggage compartment as an announcement was made in the plane asking the passengers to shut down their mobile phones and other communication equipment before takeoff.

 

According to the Bangkok Post, this prompted the pilot to ask all the 160 passengers, who were already seated, to disembark for security checks of the luggage compartment.

 

The group of six passengers were invited for questioning. Following the security checks, no bombs were found.

 

A new announcement was made that Thai Lion Air Flight SL703 would depart for Don Mueang from Hat Yai airport at 12.30 pm, after a delay of about two and a half hours.

What does "booked for questioning" mean??

 

"Booked" in this sense means "charged". But clearly they were not charged. Who wrote this, an idiot?

 

"Five of her colleagues were freed but kept as witnesses" is again ambiguous. "Freed" meaning not charged, "Freed" meaning released? "Kept as witnesses" meaning "not freed"? "Kept as witnesses" meaning "freed but not allowed to go"? "Kept as witnesses" meaning "missed their flight"? Who knows? Better ask the trainee reporter who cobbled this together.

Ridiculous headline - a bomb threat is NO joke - wake up people

The were invited for questioning?  

 

Too bad they don't live in a western country where they would have been dragged from the plane, handcuffed, detained for several hours, and prohibited from flying.  Now that's a punchline.  

 

 

 

 

I guess it'd be worth reading the Thai version.

The picture in the OP reminded me of using Beirut airport in the early 1980's. The hold baggage would be lined up on the tarmac beside the plane for the passengers to identify before boarding. I mainly used Beirut as a transit between Saudi and Athens and the terminal building was heaving with heavily armed 'security' personnel. A bit scary looking back but at the time didn't really have an issue over safety concerns. Maybe the increasing overload of such news items feeds the present day safety paranoia.

Thais that translate for journalism mostly do not know the nuances of our language and are stupid to it but it does make for fun reading and you can joke about it later 

Hard to believe there are still idiots who do this.

No one said it was a bomb threat It sounds like it was a conversation Having said that the Pilot did the right thing

 

There's no right time and place to make a joke about bombs on a plane, but to do so in a region where terrorists frequently do blow people up,  would be one of the more idiotic places to do it.

For starters, these " jokers " should be made to pay the airfare plus say 1500 baht to each fellow passenger for inconvenience and discomfort caused by these morons. And then charged!

Normal standard of reporting from Thai PBS. Their writer(s)of English don't really have much of a clue. You'd think that someone high up in the company reads the nonsense they put out so it seems they don't really care if they look ridiculous.

Surely by now people have heard you don't mention the B word at a airport. But guess there are still some ignorant people that dont know any better.

 

 

There was another case down there a few months ago when some geek claimed he had made a 'bomb joke' to impress a stewardess.

 

Not the sort of pickup line I would have attempted.

 

Must be something in the water down in Hat Yai.

Good candidates for the "no fly list". 

Glad to see that security took the precautions that they did.   In the 90's I flew out of Luxor , Egypt .    I was quite astonished that the entire (noticeable)  security prior to boarding, was the gate attendant asking ticket holders if they had any bombs , guns , or anything dangerous.  Since no one raised their hand , we proceeded with boarding .

There are certain rules that you must abide by in modern society.  

 

1.  Don't talk about Fight Club.

 

2.  There is one, and only one, acceptable answer to, "Does this make me look fat?"  

 

3.  Don't make jokes about bombs on planes.  

 

While you're correct that it was not a threat, it did end up delaying the flight for everyone else on the flight while the flight crew had to investigate whether or not a bomb was on board.  So, they cost the airline thousands of dollars and they inconvenienced a planeload full of people.  

 

They're not terrorists but they are a-holes and a-holes shouldn't be allowed to fly.  

 

Flying isn't a right.  Airlines ban people from flying on their aircraft all the time.  When someone acts drunk and belligerent they can be banned for life from a particular airline.  How are these idiots any different?  

 

And this isn't like they made a joke a fart joke and they were unaware that fart jokes were frowned upon.  Anybody who can fog a piece of glass with their breath knows you don't make jokes about bombs on planes.

There's a huge, huge gap between a nanny state and anarchy, where everyone does whatever the heck they please.  If you make a bomb joke the airline has to investigate.  So your joke is causing thousands of dollars in delays to the airline and your actions have caused everyone else on the plane to have their travel delayed.  That's not about too many rules and regulations.  That's about conducting yourself in a manner that does not cause harm or damage to other people.

How about them being liable for the total cost of the delay and search which is likely substantial?

One would expect better from an official of the Department of Agriculture Extension!

My guess is its a Hi-So thing, the kids were and she isn't.  So she just made it up and was the sole cause of this. The other flight attendants likely never heard them say it so they didn't.  Thai justice at work.   This will teach a lowly attendant for reporting anything in the future anyway. Good work guys. Rich looking man boards with something strapped to his body you think, just zip it honey and hope its just a medical device. If its not a bomb and you report it you may be worse off than if it was a bomb. At least you won't lose face as this one will/has.
