After weathering storm, Thai govt can enjoy smooth sailing until election

Surely the main improvement is that the rioting & shooting/bombing political-protests on-the-streets has stopped, except of course for the South which is a whole other can-of-worms ?

What the article doesn't say, the 'main event' has passed peacefully.

PatOngo quoted Bon Jovi so in respect of the road map can I suggest the Hollies ?

" The road is long with many a winding turn and leads who knows where, who knows when. "

Nothing truer these days.

Not quite so brilliant. The song itself is a timeless classic - but I think anyone with a smidgen of intelligence definitely knows where this road is leading. It's the reason I left Thailand. I would be rapturously to be proven wrong.

Been in charge for 2.5 years, can't blame previous government nearly as much now. And given the current handouts to rice farmers and the poor, seems like they are doing the same to keep majority population subdued.

Just think we can still look forward to the PM's New Year speech listing all their achievements for the year.

...the full 3 minutes?

That is an event "in progress".

A year long event, possibly more, the focus on which (it is hoped) will "keep the lid on".

But the efforts to do that will create their own dynamic.

Did the boss not say that he will be the final decider in any election for the next eight years, and then recently hinted at changing that to twenty years or did I just dream that?

Or you could have "democracy", UK style.

All this talk about democracy is crap.

This country need as strong hand to guide it after years of mis-management.

this government has done a lot more for the country than previous one, so your childish comments are uncalled for.

They have made a few cosmetic changes like clearing beach chairs and knocking down a few shacks, which really seems to impress the shallow thinkers, while at the same time trashing exports, foreign investment and tourism. Basically the entire economy.

So all of these comments are called for.

Weathered the storm, what nonsense ! I'd like to think this article is just taking a sarcastic swipe at the junta and the la la land they live in !

The reality is the headline couldn't be further from the truth considering all that's going on and with what's just unfolding the worst is potentially yet to come.

Could Thailand be an island unto itself as the world storm clouds gather. Oh well Happy New Year lets see what 2017 brings.

Stock up on Prozac. 30 years of happiness approaching.

NO!  Throw away the prescription.  You won't need it with all the happiness flowing down from the powers-that-be above, the new, and the not-so-new.

Hmmmm.   Lots of negative thinking coming out on this topic, as expected.   However, there are lots of other countries where things look a lot less desirable as alternative residences right now than they did 2.5 years when the junta took over here.   Like, for example: Sweden, Denmark, and much of Europe, wherever the "refugees" went.  And Britain for the same reason and also waiting to see how Brexit pans out for them.   Indonesia with the Muslim militants at long starting to rattle the cage bars and New Zealand with another serious earthquake problem of a different type.  The USA; hoping to see the promises of becoming great again come true, but with a lot of nervousness and uncertainty attached with the possible unwinding of recent Democrat healthcare and social safety nets for many needy Americans and grave uncertainty about its future foreign policy.   The great-secret TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership for those who do not know ---- look it up) possibly being torpedoed by The Donald is another issue casting uncertainty (or hope) over the livelihood of nearly a billion people, which would delight some countries and disappoint others. Oh, and of course Mexico, knowing that they are going to have to pay for that wall, now.

Warts and all; corruption and inequalities of justice etc included, we are in many respects probably more certain and settled here than we were three years ago.  It wasn't perfect then and still isn't,  but the sky has not fallen yet and with luck may not, even though the short term economic forecast is certainly in need of some careful but decisive action.

Yep, I can think of quite a few more places in the world where I would not want to live now, than I could think of 3 years ago.   Let's keep our fingers crossed for the good old LOS!

Thank you Mr Shinawatra for your comment and I beg to remind you that your's hasn't worked for years.  Please try to remember to address me as Khun Prayuth in future, or "SIR" or "Boss" if it is not too much trouble.

@The Deerhunter  yes a contradiction in terms      doesn't  matter what colour the specs are the junta always comes out whiter than white and smelling of roses   :heart_001:   ( if you are a junta punta )

Thanks for the clarification.  No I am not really a pro junta man but I did have really high hopes earlier on, somewhat tempered now.  They have done a lot of good but not enough real corruption has been dealt to.  Ultimately the people of Thailand need to be allowed back in the driving seat.   It all comes down to degrees of evil and most Thais away from the Shinawtra heartland or spheres of particular influence including my (low income) farming family here, feel that warts & all, they are better off over the last couple of years since the Shins lost power.   We will see what the eventual polls say in a year or so, but of course it is not my country of citizenship.  'nuff said!
