Cha-Am's fine mate. Lived there off and on for years. Smallish town, long beach and pretty tranquil except when half of Bangkok seems to descend there at weekends and public holidays. But that's fine unless you've just arrived and are looking for accommodation. But even then it's not too much of one. And only about 40 killometeres from Hua Hin for a visit. I'm 99% sure that your folks will love it there.

I can recommend two reasonably priced hotels

http://www.hotelthailand.com/chaam/kaenchanbeach/index.html

which is more or less on the beach and has a very good restaurant

And

http://www.hotelthailand.com/chaam/longbeach/index.html

A bit more laid back from the beach at the end of a soi, but still only 100yds with a good swimming pool, etcectera.

No i dont as they are not true!

I will moderate the statemment -

but isn't Pattaya's economy based largely on the sex industry? Attracting many western sex tourists! Why on earth would any one want to take their family to one of the seediest destinations on the planet?

Please tell what part of that is inaccurate?

Who says it is?

Have you been there recently? :o

Go back to thailand in feb with the Mrs (thai), son (7 months) and mom and dad.

Not my 1st time to thailand, always been to pattaya, but i dont think it would be suitable for my son and mom and dad.

So where do we go. Mom and dad stay for 2 weeks me and the mrs 24 days.

Well, if you have been to Pattaya before then you may have missed the ammenities it has on offer for families.

IMO, Pattaya has for the families enough places to go and spend a day, dare say, more than all of other tourist destinations in Thailand put together.

A hotel outside of the hots spots (and a car) may make the place have a new feel (bar the traffic).

The beach is bad, what you can find at Hua Hin and Cha Am is cleaner but nothing like Krabi or Koh Samui.

IMO, if not Pattaya, then Krabi, Phuket or Samui.

Dont get me wrong i do love Pattaya, having been there 8 times.

We have a few friends there and know our way about.

But..................

The few things that are putting me off are

1. It can get a bit rowdy (its ok for me and the mrs but not the litlle one and parents)

2. The Russians, now before i get jumped on i have no problem with other tourists but every time i go there are more and more and more.

I dont like the way they talk and treat the thais and find it hard to bite my lip sometimes (with the things ive seen).

3. I fancy a change

4.The beaches are CRAP, to be fair they are bad!!

5. The parents are only young early 50's so not a problem with the bars for a few days but that only, i think.

6. Simply want to see more of thailand. My next door neighbour is thai and they are on holiday the same time, they have a house in hua hin so we will be visiting and going to kampaeng phet, to Krabi, rayong. BKK for a day.

So get a taxi to hua hin. Then get a driver for a day to show us the sites. Sounds good.

Not that recently - 3 years ago. So you telling me my statement is untrue? I would like to see the evidence before you convince me (apart from a big tescos, a couple of golf courses and a tiger zoo!) - maybe its the beautiful beach that attracts the tourists?

But they are add ons! Take away the prostitution and how many of these would still exist? Take away the Karts/Gun Range/Croc Farm/ Buddha Hill/ Tiger Zoo/ Nang Nook/Elephant Trekking/Water Park and Pattaya would still be Pattaya!

Imagine Pattaya to be like Hua Hin and see where it takes it. Many things are already in place, Hua Hin just got it's "mini" super market Tesco last year. Pattaya does not have great infrastructure, neither does Hua Hin nor even Bangkok.

What is an apparent difference pattaya can boast is the presence of most of the things the Westerners (or tourists) might want.

And HH is on the wrong side of everything.

I'm saying that your statement is both untrue and inaccurate.

Mittheimp,

If you honestly think that Pattaya is "the seediest destination in the world" I would suggest you get out more. Pattaya has hookers, yes, there is no doubt about that, yes it also has criminals and parts of it could do with a good steam clean, yes I doubt anyone would disagree with that.

But have you ever been to the cages in Bombay or Rio De Janerio, Port Moresby or even bluudy Wolverhampton on a Saturday night.

At least in Pattaya (for the most part) the hookers are in the bars, not hanging on every street corner or accosting you everywhere you go. The Crime is mostly Thai on Thai and, though some, very few are armed and the authorities do try very hard to keep the place half clean.

It is very easy to go out in Pattaya and not be accosted by hookers, robbed at gunpoint or ingest E coli from a cockroach sandwich........just avoid those few places where this could possibly happen, we all know where they are !

"the seediest destination in the world".............maybe you should rethink that statement just a little bit !

And since that statement was also based on a trip 3 years ago maybe a refresher would do you good. There are big changes with Pratumnak, Jomtiem, North and Central Pattaya all making slow but steady steps to move a bit up market.

Have a nice day

John

How about the seediest destination in Thailand. If that is your thing, no problem. For families , no way.

Hate to disappoint you but families are coming in mass to Patters and these aren't one timers either. :o

The beaches are crap though, building grade sand, noisy, dirty, lots of hassle, dangerous in and out of the water. There are a couple of good beaches in the vicinity, but I'll be buggered if I'll tell you where they are, you either know or you don't, other than that Patters is bloody marvellous. :D

First time ive heard of Wolverhampton as being a holiday destination!

Look im not doubting other attractions in Pattaya exist other than the nightlife. But if you took away the availability of cheap sex then the whole tourist industry in Pattaya would collapse. If you really disagree with that then you are deluding your selves!

Posted
If you follow that logic than thats pretty much the entire country!!!! :o

Places would suffer but wouldn't collapse. Take away the girly bars from Ko samui or Phuket and you are still left with beautiful beaches. This cannot be said for Pattaya!

Posted
imho if you go to the islands krabi/phi phi after a few days you will be wanting too get back too the mainland for something too do..

go too kata beach in phuket, great beaches and good home port to see all the other areas around the south...and you can still go over the hill too patong if you want too have a wild night...enjoy.........

Yes, I agree! Kata Beach but then I have to admit I am rather biased :o

If all the crap written about Pattaya was taken out of the sewerage system, the water quality on her beaches would become pristine......and Thailand itself would be a much better holiday location if all those who like to spread their narrow minded crap would stay at home.

Most of them DO stay at home....or are two week a year "professional tourists".

How do they determine that Pattaya is so bad?

Do they live here? If so, why, if it's so bad?

If not, where do you acquire your intimate knowledge of Pattaya?

Lonely Planet magazine must have a centerfold.
