BANGKOK: -- A jealous Thai husband poured thinner on his wife and set fire to her as she sat beside him in the passenger seat of a car in Sukhumvit Soi 22 yesterday.

The bizarre incident happened in broad daylight after 42 year old Somboon Phondee went to pick up his wife Sophitta after her shift at the Marriot Marquis hotel.

Witnesses said a jealous argument broke out between the pair on the hotel steps. After the rowing couple seemed to calm they drove off in a Toyota Corolla, reports Daily News.

But further down the road locals were shocked when flames started shooting out of the front passenger compartment.

Somboon, who was driving, is believed to have doused his wife in thinner and set fire to her. He was seen to jump out on fire himself and the flames engulfing him were extinguished by passersby and he was "arrested" by concerned citizens.

Meanwhile his wife was on fire in the passenger seat. A good Samaritan got a fire extinguisher and managed to save her. She crawled out of the car and slumped to the tarmac.

Both were taken to hospital with multiple burns. Police found the car smoldering with a completely destroyed iPhone burnt out on one of the seats and a cigarette lighter in the compartment.

There was also an opened beer bottle and an opened beer can in the car.

Police are studying CCTV and interviewing witnesses to the drama before deciding what charges to lay in the case.

Thai deliberate charges. It's too obvious to all else that it's attempted murder, but Thais need to deliberate. Thais love to deliberate and put off doing the right thing.

And he just happened to have the thinner with him.

If he already had the thinners with him it was a premeditated attack.

He should be jailed for a long time if it is true.

Evil plain evil to do such a thing.

Sorry guys, whilst the poor taste responses did make me smile someone is seriously injured, a bunch of posts have been hidden.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

What sad bastards. This woman has been scared for Life. Grow up <deleted> knobs

The next thing is he will give her family a wheelbarrow full of money and all will be forgiven. Thai justice has a monetary value.

and the iphone?

He'll say he was planning to clean the inside windscreen whilst lighting a cigarette 'all an accident'

He has a wheelbarrow of money?

If he is that wealthy, why is his wife working at the Marriot Hotel? Or does he own the hotel?

Could it be that the guy is a painter and thus having a can of paint

with him is plausible?.....

Charges what charges, just a domestic dispute.

seems like the husband could have been drinking thinner

He was probably drinking it.

Does he look like he has a ton of money ?

Whether this particular individual has the money or not is not the point I am making . The thrust of my comment that seems to escape you is that so often victims families get paid out to satisfy the perpetrators and get them off the hook; that is if they have the money. If they don't have the money then they get what's coming.

I repeat for your benefit and thhMan....Thai justice has a monetary value.

Im sick of hearing these types of situations. Thai male ego is pathetic. Go after this other guy if its a dick swinging contest. Cant blame her for trying to get something better you oppressive, abusive @#$_! Lucky i dont know this scum.....

i am anti death penalty but i believe in  'do unto others as they do unto you'.  there fore she should be allowed to light him up.  something needs to be done to stop these crimes of passion. on the contrary in thailand passion seems to be used as an excuse for these crimes.

We all enjoy a good laugh and some stories just lend themselves to it but this isn't one of them.

The lady was set on fire and we are yet to find it if it was planned or just rage but either way it's not in the least bit funny.

Read an article like this one and you just know with a deadly predictability what kind of responses you're going to get.  A bunch of inflated egotesticle asses braying about such imbecilities as "no wonder Thai women preferred farangs." (The overwhelming majority of Thai women marry Thai men and are just fine thank you.)

Then comes the ignorant extrapolation of one Thai male's behavior to the entire Thai male population, including asinine observations about the "Thai male ego."  In spite of the fact that this "white man's burden" bullshit went extinct at least a century ago.

And some of these ramblings come from senior members of this forum. Jesus <deleted> Christ man, you think by now you would have headed back home if that's the way you feel. But then again maybe you're stuck here. Either in a dead end job that you hate or married into a family you now despise.  Time to grow a pair, head back to Blighty or wherever tf it is you hail from.

 Pathetic. Simply pathetic.

Think about this story next time your bangin some dudes 'Ol Lady. I guess some Thai men are'nt smart enough for an elaborate scam on a farang..
