Although I agree with what colinneil says - under a fair legal system it should not be up to the accused to prove their innocence,, but the responsibility of the accusers to prove guilt

I suspect Smedley is meaning scaly characters outside of the temple issues. I suspect he's meaning others who have a very different agenda and just looking for an opportunity to use anything which can be twisted into conflict to cause division, and with no hesitation to include violence. The scaly characters concerned know well how to use unaware folks to be fodder for their unsavory activities and their unethical / immoral cause.
