NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 12 December 2016 (NNT) - Improvements have been reported in the flood situation in Nakhon Si Thammarat province as drainage equipment and machinery are being deployed.

After being inundated by severe floods, the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat is seeing a continuous decline in the water level. Only three low-lying areas in the Pak Phanang River Basin now remain submerged under flood water, consisting of Chian Yai, Chulabhorn and Pak Phanang districts.

Mr Kornnarom Wannakul, Director of the Lower Pak Phanang River Basin Operation and Maintenance Project, revealed that eight backhoes have been dispatched to the areas for the purpose of removing aquatic weeds from waterways to increase drainage capacity. In the meantime, 35 water pumps and 22 water diverting machines have been installed in a bid to drain the flood water into the Gulf of Thailand through the various local sluice gates. The director estimated that about 100 million cubic meters of water will be flushed out of the region each day and that the water situation will return to normal within the next 4-5 days.

In an effort to reach out to flood-affected fruit growers in the province, Mr Kornnarom said water pumps have also been set up in their orchards to speed up drainage. The mission is expected to be completed in a couple of days while the impact on produce will likely be minimal.
