Government drive urges foreign tourists not to buy fake goods

Why doesn't the Government remove all counterfeit goods from sale and prosecute the seller, instead of passing responsibility to the buyer ? Sometimes it can be difficult for a buyer to tell the "good from the bad"

Because the mafia police make a lot of their money from these sellers. Used to be 10,000 baht a stall/day on lower Sukhumvit.

Yes, thats why I was at a dvd stall. I dont care about copy right I download all the time etc. In my mind its victimless, child porn is not though.

I agree. At least you never made any comments on this thread regarding pirate goods when you use them, which is so hypocritical.

Seems like there is only one who is totally clean.

I told you, I don't print at home. Never need to print anything.

I personally have plenty of issues with pirate bay.

Well one really, they deal in stolen goods.

No they don't, a deal is a commercial transaction, torrents are free, it is sharing.  Is it also dealing in stolen goods if I let you read my book?

Ask the author, the publisher, those whose jobs depend upon sales.

This problem is not just in market stalls. Next time you go to tesco go to the little cafe where you get tokens to buy food and order a coca cola. The cardboard coke cup is fake as is the Coca cola inside the cup. Robinson sells fake or b grade goods in sports section too.

Just round up the vendors!!!
Easy. Just follow a normal farang into the bars visited, for example Pattaya. Every 10 minutes there's some Somchai trying to sell some fake items, watches, sunglasses.

The one evening I was in Pattaya in May this year, to visit a couple of friends, we had a vendor at our table about every 10 minutes. There was even a sign that it was forbidden to sell anything inside. Also a local law in Pattaya, since April 2015, doesn't allow sales in bars.

personally i have no problem buying a copied product, selling an original product that is made over the backs of slave labor

and selling it for a high price,is what i call stealing!Lots of examples on the net!

This urge by the government comes shortly after my home country announced they would not be fining people anymore for bringing in a few copied products.

Bluespunk ,i think it is very commendable to have principles and live by them but in todays world almost impossible.

Ridiculous, Thailand has had years to police the counterfeiters and have done nothing. Intellectual Property Laws are world wide. Is Thailand exempt ? One item that is never mentioned is computer printer ink. In today's market printer ink is more expensive than heroin/drugs and Thailand is the largest exporter of cheap fake printer ink. I have first hand knowledge that the ink comes in drums from China then bottled in Thailand. It is even sold locally at computer shops in Thailand. Big money in it and safer than selling drugs. They even copy the secret trademarks on the ink capsules. Its well organised so the RTP would never be able to police it.

You are a man of integrity then, if you speak the truth. I am, however, dubious.

Never been to Panthip Plaza?
never bought copied Samsung headphones?
What about motorcycle parts?
Microsoft office, is that original?
I don't know anyone in Thailand that pays for this "Office".  I think it rather foolish to do so.
I suppose you buy genuine cartridges for you printer and don't use the add on outside ink things?

Would love to hear from more who commented on this thread on their 100% legal software.

To be fair, I think most are commenting on/amused by/find ironic the way in which it is implied that tourists are responsible for this trade.

Anyway, got to go, my Rolex tells me it is 79 minutes past 11!

A few decades ago when the fake thing was in its infancy and Calvin Klein was fashionable, no hiso Thai would wear the brand because every taxi driver was sporting it: I don't believe CK ever became fashionable for Thais , certainly not to the same extent in the west. The cost to the company must have been substantial.

Actually the counterfeit goods sold around Europe by swarthy gentlemen of African descent seem to be more robust and a better quality than the counterfeit offerings in Thailand, perhaps Thai fakes are fakes of fakes.

They have it down to a fine art: they coordinate with each other, have lookouts on mobile phones, have the goods ready to be swept up into a sheet. When the police come looking they are gone in a flash. Every city, the same.

I manage.

I agree on the slave labour issue, but also suspect most, if not all, faked goods are produced in exactly the same conditions.

Of course not, after 3 washes they become g-strings, perhaps you should launder a little more frequently.

difficult when you can buy 30,000+ USD worth of latest software for couple thousand bhat ( maya, 3DS max, PS Suite etc ), I know quite a few indie software houses in Europe that are using them bought from Thailand.

China don't do much at all to protect IP either. I don't even think western ip law is recognised in china.

I wonder how many legit versions of windows 95/98/2000/XP are installed on official government computers?

Yet there's a war on cyber crime

You'll hardly find such old programs on any of the government PC's. Most are on W 7, or 8 these days.

I've never seen a genuine program on an Immigration, police, school, tax, or labor department, or any other governmental office PC before.

Even the police write reports against sellers of fake goods on fake programs.Ironic? It's Thainess.

i could provide the authorities with list of vendors selling illegal good right now.

such a pity the RTP doesn't have a crime stoppers scheme, as exists in other countries, whereby citizens can be rewarded for assisting the authorities in crime fighting by advising them of illegal activity. i'd be a rich man.

So why don't you?   Or will you only do it for a reward?

Hilarious. They allow the production and the importation of fake goods but blame foreigners for buying them.

Of course it's still OK for corrupt customs officials to allow the importation of knock-off auto parts from China and to allow official dealers to install them in unsuspecting motorists cars in the hope they malfunction and kill some people. Why not urge foreigners not to ride in vehicles with fake parts too? That must do inestimable damage to Thailand's reputation.

Foreigners should also also be careful not to cause further damage the nation's precious reputation for honesty by refraining from buying any goods or services from Thai businesses that use fake computer software.

It does seem that all the brake parts used in Thai buses are fake .......

Are you implying that you view book lending as a type of theft?

No I'm implying you are picking an argument by making analogies that do not apply.

I'm implying that as far as I'm concerned using pirate bay is theft.

You do what your conscience allows you.

I'll do what mine allows me.
