Government drive urges foreign tourists not to buy fake goods

Featured Replies

I'm shocked,  shocked, to discover that some of the goods on-sale here in Thailand aren't genuine ! :shock1:

reminds me years back when elephants were to be stopped from coming into bangkok. instead of fining the owners they would fine the tourists 10 000thb  who pay to feed them. it seems in thailand it is 'the customer is always in the wrong' wonder what the fine will be for buying fake goods.

such a pity the RTP doesn't have a crime stoppers scheme, as exists in other countries, whereby citizens can be rewarded for assisting the authorities in crime fighting by advising them of illegal activity. i'd be a rich man.

Unfortunately taking such an action would be an offense under the Computer Crimes Act and also actionable (only in Thailand of course) under defamation laws.

You have to be kidding... most tourists come here mostly to buy fake goods,

and most of Thai people buy and use fake and pirated goods and IT products.....

I wonder how may computers in the government use genuine/ real Windows etc. lol lol lol Close to zero I would guess.

Sometimes the fakes can look like the real deal , one of the large up market hand bag chains in H K got a surprise when one of the top bods from Head office arrived and decided to check some serial numbers, they didn't exist, the bags were fakes from China, they were selling as the genuine thing fakes, a message there somewhere..............................................:coffee1: .,

Let him who is without sin cast the first stone

Anyone here never bought a fake Rolex(or other) watch?

Anyone here never bought a copied DVD/VCD?

Anyone here never bought a copy of Windows?

Anyone here never downloaded from thepiratebay?

Anyone here never bought a copied part for their car?

If there is any poster who is squeaky clean, please speak up.

Personally, I have done all of the above and happy that I live in a country where this is possible.

Does that include fake wifes

Round up the usual Burmese suspects.

I have done none of the above [ok, I don't drive so the car one has never been an option].

I buy genuine only.

To do so otherwise is theft.

You are a man of integrity then, if you speak the truth. I am, however, dubious.

Never been to Panthip Plaza?

never bought copied Samsung headphones?

What about motorcycle parts?

Microsoft office, is that original?

I don't know anyone in Thailand that pays for this "Office".  I think it rather foolish to do so.

I suppose you buy genuine cartridges for you printer and don't use the add on outside ink things?

Would love to hear from more who commented on this thread on their 100% legal software.

The department will join hands with foreign embassies in Thailand to warn each country’s travellers not to buy fake goods during their visits in Thailand

Thailand ranks #3 and China #1 as producers of faked goods.

https://www.oecd.org/industry/global-trade-in-fake-goods-worth-nearly-half-a-trillion-dollars-a-year.htm

So cracking down in Thailand on faked products not only damages Thailand's economy but its BFF trade partner China who sells fake Thai souvenirs to chinese tourists through Thai vendors. I'm sure the Chinese government will show Thailand government a measured appreciation, ie., limit number of Chinese tourists to Thailand.

My wife just laughed & said "no reason for tourists to come here now"

Dubious?

Why?

I have principles, do you not do so?

Again, no to all the above items you list.

Let me repeat...I buy genuine goods only.

Only print at work and only for work. It's a wireless/paperless world these, days don't you know.

As for samsung headphones...beats studio wireless or Marshall wireless only for me.

Genuine article of course.

Targeting travellers?  Why not target the producers and sellers of fake goods in the country.  Blatantly sold on street corners and markets, should be easy for RTP.  Should be....

Because they are paying the police and the police don't like having to reduce their Divisional Officer's pension pot income!

Your the only guy I've ever met in Thailand with any principles then, maybe because the money is of no significance for you. I have principle but obviously different from yours.

A paperless printer, wow. Come on, you've never posted ANYTHING personal?

You are an oddity, let's see how many others are as honest as you.

And child porn.

I've got to say that in the last 8 years I've lived here -- and frequented places where sexual favours are on offer on may occasions -- I've never seen or witnessed any child porn. I know it goes on but so it does in every country.

I said it's a wireless/paperless world...i.e. you don't need to print.

Yes, we all have principles, but I'd have thought basic honesty was a prime one.

It's not a matter of how much money I have. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it.

I wouldn't steal the goods and neither would I buy copies. As far as I'm concerned, the two actions are the same thing.

Fakes are theft.

The usual 'in denial' approach, blame the tourists.

So basically, they are going to close MBK?? :giggle:

Or restrict the access to locals only ??

So you don't have a home printer, strange, as most people, even honest ones, need to prints things from time to time.

Well, let's wait and see if there are more here with principles.

Many come here and think it's ok to do illegal things as many do it. Some even ride a motorcycle with no helmet(not me!), hire prostitutes(not me!) etc.

Personally, I just downloaded something on the piratebay and have no issues with it at all.

I told you, I don't print at home. Never need to print anything.

I personally have plenty of issues with pirate bay.

Well one really, they deal in stolen goods.

Call yourself a punk?

I have been offered to buy child porn, or should I say pre teen material, under the counter at several mall dvd places. Disgusting. Greasy dvd vendors that smile and ask if you are in to young girls.

Punks have principles as well.

Theft is wrong on all levels.

But did you buy any other DVD's?

Would be interesting to check out the legality of the software used in Thosapone Dansuputra, director-general of the ministry’s Intellectual Property Department computer!

Why doesn't the Government remove all counterfeit goods from sale and prosecute the seller, instead of passing responsibility to the buyer ? Sometimes it can be difficult for a buyer to tell the "good from the bad"

But did you buy any other DVD's?

Yes, thats why I was at a dvd stall. I dont care about copy right I download all the time etc. In my mind its victimless, child porn is not though.
