Pattaya beach nourishment program?

Was visiting Pattaya last month and along beach road at the end and at the beginning there were put up some fences.a sign said it was to enlarge the pattaya beach?it says the project will cost several billion bht?I looked behind the fences and no workers even there just one excavator and some pile of rubbish.Does someone knows what is going on here?

As far as I know it's to prevent erosion. I was there last month and they were rolling booms in cloth and placing them along the beach (north end). I guess as some kind of breakwater.

We had a thread about it not long ago. The beach was thoroughly disparaged, all erosion blamed on the stupidity of City Hall. Our large contingent of ace shoreline engineers sneered at Thai plan and as usual weighed in with vastly superior solutions that would fix the problem for all time and would mean a pristine beach to rival that of Clearwater, Florida. Nothing new can be said here.

 

Some months ago one of our members rode by the new tunnel construction and saw little work being done on the day. He was assured of course the project would either never be completed or perhaps completed decades into the future. Now, in fact, it's almost done. Pauses in construction work are typical & nothing to get your knickers in a twist about. And there's no need for phony hand wringing about schedules here anyway. It's done when its done. Or not. Roll w/ the flow.

So they will widen the sand beach?all the way from near walking street till past the hardrock hotel?just wonder how the water will not  wash the sand away?if built a retainer wallin the water then its possible but then if u step from the sand beach in the water u be in deep water right away.why it costs billions of bht?where these costs come from?

Not some millions but 500 millions, and it will last only few years before the beach disappears again.

 

Only solution is to build something in the sear to protect the beaches but they needed someone smart to think about it and I was not asked anything :-)

The fence is there to catch all the garbage that washes over from Koh Samui. They'll sprinkle some sand on top and have an enlarged beach.

The top left photo is North end ( Dusit Thani pt  to Holiday Inn where there are about 600 giant sandbags stacked up.

All vessels and equipment for delivering sand to beach are gone. I guess they are waiting for the extreme low spring tides before positioning sandbags offshore.  The other two photos are South end above and below trailer trash. As can be seen there is very little beach left. If this project were to be done right a real breakwater would be constructed from Dusit pt South that would protect beach from being washed out. Like the L.A./Long Beach outer harbor breakwater above.

It is the "we messed up and now have to spend money to fix the problem we caused" program.  It is very simple:  1) too much concrete covering what was once a natural water-capture area, 2) terrible drainage infrastructure, 3) horrible beach promenade design that facilitates erosion, and 4) old-growth tree destruction (the trees were once holding the dirt/sand in place, mitigating erosion).  One of the worst thing they did was to destroy most of the old-growth trees.  That was a FUBAR move.  And they did it twice:  first in Pattaya and second in Jomtien.  Amazing Thailand!

Sad thing is that if they employed someone that actually knew something about beach erosion they might fix it, but they won't. Probably employ someone's "cousin" because he went to university. Also, like the beach walkway, it will be done on the cheap and will fail anyway.

This is the beach protection breakwater in Na Jomtien, south of Ocean Marina. These have been there for many years and seem to work. Something similar could be tried in Pattaya Bay.

I have lived / worked here 12 years & I have not seen one city project ( street pedestrian crossing lights, Dolphin street lights, beach promenade, repairing side walks to taking care of Bali pier) done properly ( & I am not the "city engineer or expert that should be more of a specialist in these projects than my common self. I guess the city cannot sue for poor or delayed projects. ( but you don't want to hold a relative accountable).

Yes, the redo for Beach Road sidewalk I think turned out quite well.

This nourishment I hope will do well but, so far it seems to just be a place for dogs and people to urinate and defecate.

for those that say the beach sidewalk "turned out quite well " 

Even Stevie Wonder could see what a disaster this redo is.

Two lower left photos are redo/beach restoration combo.

The upper left photo really is a good depiction of the shade that we once had.  It was nice to walk/jog up and down the promenade in the shade and also have nice places to sit.  It was also, obviously, wider then.  Now, they have reduced the width of the promenade by the width of one traffic lane, removed virtually all of the old-growth trees that were providing shade and preventing soil erosion, and destroyed virtually all places to sit.  The Pattaya/Jomtien beach renovations projects are a disaster.   Virtually all farangs know this, but oddly, many Thais actually like both renovation projects.

You meant upper right photo, like i meant lower right photos in post # 19.

The left current  photo is across from Pattayalands ( above construction trailer trash) 

The right photo is in same area about 2004.   And is continuation of johng's second photo above going South

I think you mean lower RIGHT pics are after the disaster walkway was built.

It is policy for city projects to be done half-arse, not up to perfection. Too bad the Germans or Brits never colonized this kingdom; for, the organization & workmanship would not be so inferior as it is today.

These breakwater are exactly what Pattaya needs but it seems that nobody has enough brain at Pattaya to understand it.
