CHUMPHON: -- An 11 year old boy in Chumpon was hospitalized after he came into contact with rove beetles.

The mother of the P5 (year six) boy said that he was sleeping with a neon light on last Saturday. She went into his room and saw he had a lot of the beetles (known as duang kon kradok in Thai) over him, reports Thai News Agency.

The boy brushed some of the insects onto his genitals and also wiped his eye in a panic.

Next day his penis and testicles had seriously swollen and so had his eye.

He was admitted to Sawee Hospital. He was unable to urinate and was admitted to the emergency ward. He is now recovering.

Health officials said that there was a lot of the insects about in at least five districts of the southern Thai town.

People can spray to keep their numbers down. Spraying should be done where the insects gather, such as near lights, but the insects should not be sprayed on directly.

Rove beetles are among the largest species of beetles in the world and have been around since the Triassic period 200 million years ago.

Some nasty blisters from contact with one of these

Shows the importance of placing insect screens on all windows and doors, and not just sleeping with those Thai netting cloths.

That looks really nasty:

The Rove beetle that is increasingly common in Malaysia. Their bodies contain the toxin paederin (hence Paederous dermatitis) that causes burns on human skin whenever they are crushed  more: http://docfiles.blogspot.com/2007/06/paederousrove-beetle-dermatitis.html

There is some kind of outbreak here. Couple of friends at work were victims of this beetle the last few weeks and I had one on my arm the other day.

They look exactly like my ex wife Boy did she burn me

Lucky he wasn't hurt by Rolling Stones (sorry I could not resist the word game)

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder!

Poor little fella, hope he has a complete recovery and they take him out and buy a couple of toys,

Nasty looking critters. I think most people's natural instinct would be to avoid them even without being told.

just looked them up and see they are related to the Earwig

My old way of reducing Earwig numbers was to breed Quails, who go nuts over the Earwig, and

will do marathons to catch that prey, (even when only a day old chick, when the bug is almost as long as the chick itself)

i don't know this bug so i just wonder now what is the reason they came sitting on him with so many.

Could it be a sweet smell of soap? Perfume? Sweat?

"Help!" the Beatles are attacking....

Lots of nasty bugs here, these are just one example.

You need to take care. His parents should have been more aware.

These bugs must have been attracted by something, not the light as we are talking about a different type of insect.

Get well soon kid.

Bug sprays may have neurological implications. Two handy methods for dealing with insects are:

  1. Use a vacuum cleaner, especially one with a hose attachment.
  2. Use a toilet type brush. The bristles impale the bug without squashing it all over the place.

I am going to this kids town. All I need is a doctor who can stop the pain but leave the swelling bee.
