I go to Philippines at least 3 times a year as I prefer the girls, service levels, English and politeness but I could not live there as the infrastructure in Thailand is decades ahead. If the philippines had that infrastructure I'd be there not here.

This is an interesting topic for me as I consider spending some time in PI. One topic has just been touched on and I'm curious about personal safety there compared to Thailand. After 10 years I have concluded that Thailand is a bit of The Wild West. More people are packing than I ever imagined and to some degree a farang can be hurt or killed by a Thai with impunity I think. It is even worse in the PI? Muggings? Angry Pinoys? What?

Angry Pinoys are few and far between and if they are angry its generally not against foreigners. I think thats a major difference in attitude between Thais and Filipinos. The two exceptions are if you shame the wrong person and hurt their (highly sensitive) pride or if you interfere in something/anything that involves crime or corruption. In that case you are playing with fire, and you either have to get your wallet out or risk a bullet in the head. But, mind your own business and you will never come accross anything like this. Ignorance is bliss.

In my experience of six years in the Philippines, I very, very rarely saw or heard of violent crimes against foreigners. And in the few cases I did hear off, the culprits were severely punished (unofficially and officially). The Philippines recognizes and takes crimes against foreigners very seriously unlike other places I could mention. Obviously if you are a drunken idiot gobbing off and acting like an ahole then you get what you deserve, but if you behave yourself and have a bit of street sense you will be fine. I never felt threatened the whole time I was there.

Filipino men between themselves however will fight, stab and shoot each other at the drop of a hat...

If it's about living in which of these 2 countries, i cant contribute anything. Years back when i visit Manila and Bangkok as a tourist, I didnt return to Manila after the second visit. One just cant feel happy there watching the state of poverty on the streets.
A close pal runs a business that requires him to visit both cities very regularly. He told me every time in Manila he hires an armed escort.

As for the girls, IMHO Pinas seem
friendlier because they speak better English and are more desperate to find someone to get them out of the country. Thousands of Pinas work in my home country and I can say for sure that they are not that friendly here.

Regarding the Filipino women, yes, you're spot on.  Most that chase foreigners are desperate to get out of the PI...to anywhere, but preferably America.  There are certainly impoverished women in Thailand who are looking to be saved by a foreigner, but even most of them don't want to leave the country.  And the fact that Filipinas speak passable English makes it "seem" like they're friendlier, but it's an illusion.

"An illusion"??????

Having spent time with a wide range of Filipina women from a host of different social and economic backgrounds, as friends, colleagues and girlfriends, I have to say that such a generalization reeks of ignorance.

The illusion is that Filipino women are friendlier than Thai women.  If you can speak Thai, you'd find Thai women just as friendly if not more so.  Unless you'd prefer to live in ignorance.

So.... nothing to do with the cultural similarities then, compared to the void between western and Thai????

Cultural similarities?  Between a dirt poor peasant Filipina and a westerner?  Whatever.  I have heard that once a Filipina gets herself to the USA, she'll spend the rest of her waking life trying to get her family there.  Can't blame her, the PI is a bit of a sh*thole.

A lot of the comments I have to agree with regarding PI. I lived there for just 4 years and enjoyed my time there.

Not in the main areas but in an island called Bohol. Sure it was a little backward but the basic infrastructure was there.

On Panglao island we had the tourists at one end but generally I stayed on Bohol. Really loved the marine scene and diving and San Miguel was a nice drop.

Food was ok if you knew what you liked....but for the uninitiated it can be a bit of a shock.

I had big plans when I was there, brought land with ideas to subdivide and sell to foreigners which would help me pay for a rather large house to be built in the same area.

Unfortunately the Filipino wife went a bit crazy and I had to leave very quickly or I'd either be locked up or dead. It not as if I'd done anything to her or being disloyal.  Something snapped in her head and I was to wear her rage/anger etc.

I moved to Thailand about 5 years ago and haven't looked back since. I did a few days in BKK (To get rid of some bad spirits...and drink a few good ones) before moving to Chiang Mai.

I love the place. Food is great, people are good (And I've met some great expats too).  I do miss the sea but I can live without that for a while.

I like that being out in Mae Rim it's reasonably quiet, but town isn't far away. The nightlife is near to non existent but then I'm over most of that. Haven't been down Loi Kroh road for years.

All in all.... although I liked the Philippines, Thailand is my home and it's better for me too.  Just need another job so I can continue what I'd planned to do in the Phils.

New GF keeps me busy and I love her to bits. No craziness so maybe this time I can stay! ?

Your talking crap. Have you ever told jokes to either Thai or Philippina women.? Thai women just do not have a sense of humor maybe they do but it has to be delivered in Thai.

Geez man, are you stoned or what?  You just answered your own question.  That's my point, if you can speak Thai, you'd never say that Filipino women were friendlier than Thai women.

That's all true, another anomaly though is that as a foreigner if you do get caught out doing something you shouldn't (or are just accused of something), they love to make an example of you, hence any foreigner committing a crime will get way more attention than a local for the same crime and probably less of a fair hearing i'd guess (purely anecdotal of course). This can mean you are more vulnerable to blackmail. You need your head screwed to avoid learning the hard way. That may not be so different from Thailand too of course.

I did not answer my own question. I just omitted to say that I never had any trouble getting a laugh from pinay's when I tell a joke. I suggest your the one who is stoned otherwise I would not have to spell things out for you. Doh

I respectfully disagree. I think Filipinas are very friendly. It can be an illusion, depending on where you look (same as in Thailand), but generally i don't think it is. Filipinos in general like foreigners (i think thats is pretty rare in any country?). Although i have much more experience with Filipinas than Thai girls. In my experience many of the poorer Filipina girls are not purely gold diggers or even that desperate about money or to leave the country. They will take what they can get, because they need it simple as that. Fair play to them. Many, many are single mothers (good luck trying to get an abortion there if you get one pregnant).  What they seek is commitment, love and some security. However, if there are family pressures on them, then that can change the dynamic. It's the family you have to watch out for more than the girls themselves. I'm generalising of course, but that is my over-riding impression after 4 years (and many girls) in Philippines. Maybe i've been lucky, but i'd say 70% of the girls i've met have been very sweet indeed. A few bad experiences can shape your opinion, as can a few good experiences, but again, don't imagine that's any different in Thailand.

I suspect 20 years ago, girls/people generally were friendlier to foreigners in Thailand, but then as the economy developed and numbers of foreigners grew, well... So, maybe that is how it will go in The Philippines. I'd say enjoy it while you can. :)

I just thought of another possibility in your case--you're just not very funny.  But the desperate pinay would laugh at just about anything.

You are definitely not a good judge of character. I have been a joker all my life and usually the life of any party. I don not need a Berk to tell me I cannot tell a joke. Now I know where they got the expression right berk from. Berkshire

The basic cultural fabric between the Philippines and Thailand is nothing alike, but people keep wanting to compare the two.  The PI probably has more in common with a South American country than it does to an Asian one.  As for Americans, it's a long relationship going back to WWII and even up to the 80's when the US military had a huge presence.  I like Filipinos in general as I've met many back in the states.  But the country has really gone down the toilet due to ingrained corruption...among other things.

Let's try to have a civil debate...without the self-boasting.  Filipino women aren't any more friendly than say, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Thai women for that matter.  They just speak a bit more English.  That's it, and that's all.

You "have heard"???? Well if that is not a solid basis for your crass assumptions, then nothing is.

And why are you so biased against the under privileged of any society?

Why do well educated Filipina nurses from good families choose to go live in the west, while the Pattaya bar girl / hooker from Khon Karen insists she will not leave Thailand and her new husband must build a house in her village?

Calm down dude.  I should have said "I've seen" instead of "I've heard," if I knew you would be so anal-retentive.  Yes, I've met well educated Filipina nurses in the US.  They're mostly married to Filipino men.  As for your last question...I haven't the foggiest.

You're just plain wrong on this one as Filipinos are far more service oriented and polite/friendly. Yes I do speak some Thai but Filipinos girls are just softer and kinder and if you have travelled as extensively as I have in both places I speak from decades of observance. Good and bad in both but speaking generally.
