3BB shaping connection, what about TOT ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Several years ago I switched to 3BB and it was really faster. Now I noticed that that 3BB shaping connection at evenings.

Fiber optic connection speed at day time gives 10 Mb per second, at evenings gives 600 kbs/sec.

Its not load because 600 is a constant number and not changing. Never seen that speed was limited to 1 Mb per sec. or something.

So I conclude the connection is forcibly shaped.

My question to TOT fiber optic users: what is the speed during the day and evening ?

600 kbs in 600 Kilobytes or 600 Kilobits?

All isps throttle connection at evenings. You may choose to use a singapore vpn for atleast 10mbit single connection speed at evenings.

I didn't know any fiber optics plans existed as low as 10Mb.

How do you know you're experiencing actual traffic shaping, versus just plain resource contention?

I can do speed tests to fixed foreign servers both with and without the always helpful Singapore VPN jump-around so see what locations are experiencing the greatest impairment.  Usually the Asian locations are all running near full speed when everyone has jumped online to watch their streaming movies from US-based servers.  So for my 30/3 TOT Fiber connection it's just resource contention to Europe and the USA.

I have Singapore VPN as well as one from San Francisco and even Amsterdam it does not make any difference at evenings.

How do I see 3BB is shaping connection:  The number of 600 kb/s is constant every day. No matter where I download file from USA/Europe.

Pib: My plan is 30MB, but the speed is very low every evening.

When you said 10Mb earlier in your OP I thought that might be the advertised domestic speed of your plan....that is paying for 10Mb plan...getting that during the day but only 600Kb at night.

For "domestic/in-Thailand" speed you should be getting 30Mb 24/7...if not, you probably got a local line problem...need to call 3BB.   Now for "international" speeds that's a different story as you speed can vary from international location to location and over the 24 hour period, with usually the 6pm to midnight period being the slowest.

You can look in this testmy.net database for 3BB to see what speeds other folks on various 3BB speed plans are getting to different testmy.net server locations.   Now the database will not show if a person is on a 30Mb plan or whatever speed plan but in many cases you can figure out what plan they are probably on.  Like if they are getting 125Mb to Singapore then they are surely on the fiber 200/50 plan because the next lower plan is now the VDSL 50/10 plan.   But there are plenty of people getting much, much greater speeds to international speeds that 600Kb.  Note the column titled CONNEC TID, when you see some identical numbers that is one specific person doing multiple tests....click on that number and then it will display all the speed tests that person accomplished recently and it just may show he tested to a variety of locations over a short period (like to Singapore, London, LA, etc) and then you can get a better feel for how his plan is working to various location.   He may have done many more test over the previous days but those tests may now be listed under a differrent CONNECT ID number as that ID number is really referenced to a cookie on the person's computer which may have changed/got deleted and recreated especially when he turned his computer off and on or even just closed and reopened his browser.    In the database plenty of 3BB people are getting much faster international speed than

And here's two links for the testmy.net database displaying most of the TOT tests.   Two links are listed since the bulk of the test seem to be listed under 2 listings versus the bulk of 3BBs being under 1 listing.   For TOT's listing below the second listing may be their leased/more pricey plans since international speed shown are higher than the 1st listing.

Testmy.net is a "single-thread" tester which mean it only opens "one internet" pipe to the distance server location to test your speed.  Other testers like Speedtest.net and DSL Reports are "multi-thread" testers which open up multiple pipes to the distance test server.    Multithread testers will give you much higher speeds to most international locations.  Now the DSL Reports tester defaults to multi-thread but you can change it to single-thread in its settings.  If you are watch live video streaming which only normally uses/allows a single-thread connection to their server then using a single  thread tester is better to see what speed you are getting.  And as mentiond the speed you get with a single thread tester will usually be significantly lower than when using a multi-thread tester since with a muti-thread tester more internet pipes are open to flow data....kinda like using multiple water hoses vs one hose to file up a bucket with water.  Both single and multi thread testers have their pros and cons depending on what your a testing for.  If wanting to test to see how fast your "file downloading" could be then using a multi-thread tester is better....probably better for general internet browsing also.
